أَقْفَرَتِ الوَعْساءُ وَالعَثاعِثُ

مِن أَهْلِها وَالبُرَق البَرَارِثُ

The desolate place emptied of its people and lightning storms,

While ambushes used to make me recoil,

وَكُنْتُ لَمّا تُلْهِنِي الهَنابِثُ

وَلا أمُورُ القَدَرِ البَواحِثُ

Nor the matters of fate searching me out,

And from my tossing ship - boards cracking from the quick turns

وَمِنْ هَوايَ الرُجَّح الأَثَايثُ

تُمِيلُها أَعْجَازُها الأَواعِثُ

As their sterns sway like eggs no filth touching them

My head’s times a reed-bed left neglected,

كَالبيْضِ لَمْ يَطْمِثْ بِهِنَّ طَامِثُ

أَزْمانَ رَأْسِي قَصِبٌ جُثاجِثُ

Unwoven by fakers or tricksters,

So if ruin befell it, it’s as if a wanton had spoiled my head,

لَمْ يَنْتَسِجْهُ الشَمَط الأَبَاغِثُ

فَأَصبَحت لَو هَايثَ المُهايِثُ

Sliding off its cartilage worms...

After a brownish she-camel that had twins,

كَأَنَّما أَفسدَ رَأسي عابثُ

تَزِلُّ عَنْ صَرْدَحِهِ البَرَاغِثُ

So I said when enterprise wearied, the milch-camels falling, the howdahs slipping:

“You, O Harith, are indeed the best guardian,

بعدَ خُدارِيٍّ لَهُ مَثايِثُ

فَقُلت إذ أَعيا امتِياثاً مايِثُ

Most delusive in glory, with inheritance to come,

A sea if helpers seek him out,

وَطاحَتِ الأَلبانُ وَالعَبايِثُ

إِنَّكَ يا حَارِثُ نِعْمَ الحارِثُ

You are the lion of the night-raid, the twister,

With an assault that hurls the fighting men at you

أَغَرُّ في مَجْدٍ لَهُ مَآرِثُ

بَحْرٌ إِذا ما اسْتَوْرَدَ المَغَاوِثُ

When the armed warrior is sluggish from wounds.”

God, the Mighty, the Inheritor, may know

وَأَنْتَ لَيْثُ المَزْحِفِ المُلاَيِثُ

ذُو صَوْلَةٍ تَرْمِي بِكَ المَدَالِثُ

That when disasters grow strong

I hope in you when an envied effort wearies me,

إِذا اسْمَهَرَّ الحَلِسُ المُغالِثُ

قَدْ يَعْلَمُ اللَّهُ العَزِيزُ الوَارِثُ

In the land of Kurman while you remain there,

So may God guide you to us, the Sender,

أَنِّيَ إِذَا مَا اشْتَدَّتِ الهَبَائِثُ

أَرْجُوك إِذ أَغْبَطَ جَهْدٌ والِثُ

No beggar cursing you will get anything from you,

A host of youth and greybeards,

بِأَرْضِ كَرْمانَ وَأَنْتَ ماكِثُ

فَسَاقَكَ اللَّهِ إِلَيْنَا الباعِثُ

Your land no barrenness and no slyness,

Spacious plains, gentle, bloodstained,

فَمَا يَنِي يَرْغَثُ مِنْكَ الراغِثُ

خَيْراً فَرَاجِي عِدّةٍ وَشابِثُ

The land wherein are rivulets streaming,

The sale of the elite horses goes on

أَرْضُكَ لا جَدْبٌ وَلا مَخَابِثُ

ساحاتُ سَهْلٍ سَهْلَةٌ دَمَايِثُ

For half-price until the wife-takers settle,

And the bonds of clientage clasp,

وَالأَرْضُ فِيهَا دِمَنٌ مَرَامِثُ

مَا زالَ بَيْعُ السَرَقِ المُهَايِثُ

And a predator roams around among us,

A truth-teller or a cheating salesman.

بالضَّعْفِ حَتَّى اسْتَوْقَرَ المُلاَطِثُ

وحَلَّ شَدَّ العُقَدِ المُحَانِثُ

And there bite me when the biting swords bite -

Two upright systems of debt while a third sits by.

وَعاثَ فِينَا مُسْتَحِلٌّ عايِثُ

مُصَدِّقٌ أَوْ تاجِرٌ مُقَاعِثُ

Unless you pay my debt, my debt will persist

While I am exhausted, driven on without rest.

وَعَضَّ بِي إِذْ عَضَّتِ المَغَارِثُ

عِدْلانِ مِنْ دَيْنٍ وَرِدْءٌ ثالِثُ

And sheer calamity has been revealed,

If immoralities spread among your tribe,

إِلَّا تَضَعْ دَيْنِي فَدَيْنِي لابِثُ

وَأَنَا مَجْهُودُ النِيَاطِ لاهِثُ

From complication of affairs having wretched issues -

You set it right until malignity departs.

وَقَدْ تُجَلَّى الكُرَبُ الكَوارِثُ

وَإِنْ فَشَتْ فِي قَومِك المَشَاعِثُ

مِن أَصْر أَدآثٍ لَهَا دءَائِثُ

أَصْلَحْتَ حَتَّى تَذْهَبَ النَكَايِثُ
