1. لَمْ يَدْرِ ما الزاكِي مِنَ المُخاسِي

    يا أَيُّهَا السائِلُ عَنْ نُحاسِي

    He knew not what was pure from what was foul,

    O questioner about my brass wares,

  2. عَنِّي وَلَمّا يَبْلُغُوا أَشْطاسِي

    إِنْ كُنْتَ مِن أَمْرِكَ في مِسْماسِ

    Leave off from me ere they reach my shoe straps,

    If you are reduced to poverty in your affairs,

  3. فَاسْطُ عَلَى أمِّكَ سَطْوَ الماسِي

    وَكُنْتَ مِنْ دائِكَ ذا إِفْلاسِ

    Then stretch over your mother the smoothness of the file,

    And you are made poor by your disease,

  4. فَاسْتَقِئاً بِثَمَرِ القَسْقاسِ

    Then rinse your mouth with the fruit of the gourd.
