جنى قوم على الدنيا

وشنوا الغارة الشعوا

They reaped the fruits of the world

And launched a sweeping raid

وأذكوا نارها في الغر

ب بل والمشرق الأدنى

And fueled its fire in the west

And even in the Near East

ونادوا يا لثارات

تبت الود والقربى

And called out, "Revenge!"

Family and kinship ties have been severed

وصاحوا يا لاطماع

وأموال لنا تجي

And shouted, "Oh greed!"

"Wealth will come to us"

وقالوا ما لنا ذنب

فتقل الجمل قد اعيي

And said, "We have done no wrong

That the camel is tired out"

وسلوا كل بتار

وجروا كل ما يحشى

And they asked each tower

And dragged everything they could grab

مجانيقا لقذف النا

ر حتى المعقل الاقصى

Catapults to shoot fire

To the furthest stronghold

رصاصا في أنابيب

من الفولاذ أو أقسى

Bullets in steel pipes

Or even harder

وخيلا عودوها الخو

ض في الاهوال والبلوى

And horses they trained to face

Horrors and afflictions

واسطولا اعدوه

ليوم اسود اعمى

And a fleet they prepared

For a dark, blind day

وطيارين قد شالوا ال

منايا في الفضا الأعلى

And pilots who carried off

Death into the highest space

كرات حشوها نار

فان ترشق فما ادهى

Balls filled with fire

So if you are sprinkled with them, how horrible!

فلتدمير ما شادوا

وللاحراق ما استعصى

To destroy what they built

And burn what resisted

ورايات وآلات

بها يصعد أو يدلى

And flags and instruments

To ascend or descend

وظلمات وانوار

بها يعمى ويستجلى

And darkness and lights

To blind or illuminate

وشبان إلى شرب ال

ردى سبقوا بلا استثنا

And youths who preceded

Everyone into dissipation

وماج البحر بالاسطو

ل فالحيتان لا تروى

And the sea foamed with ships

Yet the whales were not sated

وضاق البر بالعسك

ر حتى عمت البلوى

And the land was filled with troops

Until afflictions spread

وغص الجو بالراش

ق حتى اذعر الشعرى

And the air crowded with missiles

Until even the birds panicked

وصاح البوق صيحات

اعادتها بنو الهيجا

And the trumpet sounded cries

Echoed by the excited mob

مناياكم دنت منكم

إذا لم تدفعوا الاعدا

"Your death is coming from you

If you do not repel the enemy"

وقيل اقذف بنار يا

اخا المدفع لا تعبا

And it was said, "Shoot, O brother of the cannon, do not tire"

And O land, drink from our blood as we water you

ويا أرض اشربي من د

م عدانا كما نسقى

And the land of death has colors

How ugly is that which was fed

ودار الموت ألوانا

فما أبشع ما غذى

So who was cut off and who bought

And who burned when roasted

فمن جدع ومن شتر

ومن شرم إذا اشوى

And who was cut and who cut

And who wiped when blinded

ومن جذ ومن قطع

ومن مسح إذا اصمى

And determination and hesitation

And who folded and who bent

وإقدام واحجام

ومن الوى ومن أودى

And stabber and stabbed

And who was healed and who fell

وطعان ومطعون

ومن اشفى ومن اهوى

And screams and sighs

And shouts that seemed to repeat

وصرخات وآهات

وزعقات بدت تترى

And trampled and abandoned

With no merciful attendee

ومعفوس ومطروح

وما من راحم يلفى

And terrified and defeated

With no protector or refuge

ومرعوب ومهزوم

ولا حام ولا ملجا

And bodies covered the land

Suffering the agony of death

وغطى الأرض اجساد

تقاسي النزع كالاشلا

So the bird of the air panicked

And the beast of the land disappeared

فطير الجو في ذعر

ووحش البر قد اجلى

And the river water was turbid

And vegetation grew dense

وماء النهر مكدر

ونبت الأرض قد اقوى

And a fortress that used to be

Tells of scattering wheat

وحصن قد غدا في الجو

يحكي حنطة تذري

And countries and homes

With fires that kept burning

وبلدان وافطار

بنيران غدت تذكى

So no eye or feature

Or protector or pasture

فلا عين ولا رسم

ولا حمي ولا مرعى

And children and old people

Calling, “O people of value!”

واطفال واشياخ

تنادي يا ذوي الجدوى

And women without money

Or help or shelter

ونسوان بلا مال

ولا عون ولا مأوى

A mother and her children cried out

“What is this blind fate?”

تنادي الأم وأبنا

ه ما هذا القضا الاعمى

“And who will clothe and feed

Your children, O bereaved woman?”

ومن يكسو ومن يطع

م أولادك والثكلى

And how much weeping on stone

And how many despaired of life

وكم نوح على صخر

وكم في الحي من خنسا

Countries that were once

A blessing for the people of the world

بلاد طالما كانت

نعيما لبني الدنيا

Homes we knew

As beautiful gardens

ديار قد عهدناها

ربوع الحسن والحسنى

Whatever you wished for of virtue

And knowledge and nobility

بها ما شئت من فضل

ومن علم ومن عليا

And construction surpassing

Description, simile or counting

وعمران يفوق الوص

ف والتشبيه والاحصا

And no similar precedent

In a history we recount

ولم يسبق له مثل

بتأريخ لنا يروى

So alas, woe, woe

For the wounded, for the killed

فوالهفا وواويلا

على الجرحى على القتلى

And sorrow to the dissuaded ones

Amongst the people of evil and folly

وواحزن النهى في عر

س أهل الشر والحمقى

And woe to delights and wishes

And to the finest splendors

ويا ويح الملاهي وال

أماني والبها الاسنى

And those buildings and pleasures

And supreme, lofty glories

وهاتيك المباني وال

مغاني والعلى الاسمى

And gardens and orchards

And what is craved and ransomed

وروضات وجنات

وما يشهى وما يفدى

And shame on deserted wilds

Where hyenas have grown bold

وواعار البرايا في

وحوش شبت الهيجا

They rule people unjustly

Without objection

لهم في الناس حكم كا

ه جور ولا يعصى

They called for war in the name of truth

Without shame in their claim

دعوا للحرب باسم الح

ق ما استحيوا من الدعوى

Yet truth denies their claim

And mighty truth cannot be obscured

ويأبى الحق دعواهم

وجل الحق ان يخفى

And they betrayed the covenant of

The one who was good to his subjects

وخانوا عهد جبران

لهم فد احسنوا الرعيا

And broke what they pledged

And overstepped in his land

ومانوا بالذي قالوا

وداسوا أرضهم بغيا

So they did not fulfill the promise

Or realize what is recounted

فما أوفوا بموعود

ولا بالوا بما يحكى

They violated every law

And disobeyed each prohibition

تعدوا كل قانون

وعاصوا كل ما ينهى

So who of their captives suffered?

And who did they make destitute?

فمن في اسرهم عان

ومن واسوا من الهلكى

And woe to the deluded one

To the evilest afflictions

وواتبا لمغرور

لى شر البلا يسى

And the fire of war flared

Until it engulfed all people without exception

وشبّ الحرب حتى عم

ت الدنيا بلا استثنا

So we became without money

Or work or refuge

فاصبحنا ولا مال

ولا شغل ولا ملجا

Recession covered the whole world

And the grief of death amongst the living

كساد طبق الدنيا

وغم الموت في الاحيا

And poverty spread to all people

With the first blow

وفقر عم كل النا

س عند الصدمة الأولى

As if there never were

States or hopes

كأن لم تكن دولات

ولا ذو نعمة يرجى

Or those who spend millions

For comfort and amusement

ولا من يبذل الآلا

ف للراحة والملهى

Or beautiful ladies whose charm

Makes the world smile

ولا ربات حسن من

بهاها تبسم الدنيا

So despair was on people's faces

Telling of the horrors

فيأس في وجوه النا

س يروي دهشة البلوى

And the sword of war unsheathed

And a river of blood of the living

وسيف الحرب مسلول

ونهر من دم الاحيا

And a bandage that dressed the wounded

And wounded who buried the killed

وغيد تضمد الجرحى

وجرحى تدفن القتلى

And no one was safe

Except the land of America

ولم يسلم من الاقطا

ر الا قطر أميركا

Though affliction there

Also began to be seen

على ان الشقا في ه

ذه ايضا بدا يلفى

And this is just the beginning of afflictions

And the end may not be spared

وهذا أول البلوى

وقد لا تسلم الأخرى

Let the curse be upon the one

Who reaped these disasters

جنى هذي البلايا من

عليه اللعنة العظمى

And the victors said, “We will reap

The ultimate goal”

وقال الناصروه سو

ف نجني الغاية القصوى

So we have public treasuries

And wealth comes to us

فامصار لنا تعنو

وأموال لنا تجبي

And we command every fleet

And our glory ascends to the stars

ونسبي كل اسطول

ويعلو مجدنا الشعرى

And it was said, “Rain fire upon them

That consumes their limbs”

وقيل اصلوهم نارا

تلظي منهم الاحشا

“And do not stop or care

For killing aggressors is moral”

ولا تبقوا ولا تعنوا

فقتل المعتدي أنفي

“And dismantle the throne of an arrogant tyrant

Who exalted and raised himself”

وثلوا عرش جبار

قد استكبر واستعلى

“And judge them by what they judged”

“And reward his kingdom appropriately”

ودينوهم بما دانوا

وجزوا ملكهم اجزا

“And say that the spiteful one

Deserves only abasement”

وقولوا ليس للحاس

د الا الدرك الادنى

“And restore your kingdom, restoring

What diminished your pride”

وردوا ملككم ردا

يسوي فخركم ازهى

“And his oppressive state became

A tale recounted in history”

وباتت دوله الباغي

حديثا في الورى يروى

“If history makes mention of it

It will say it betrayed me”

إذا اجرى لها التأري

خ ذكرا قال قد اخنى

“And as for the state of the Sheikh who conquered and transgressed”

“Annulling it is unavoidable destiny”

وأما دولة الشيخ ال

ذي فاتح واستعدى

“To the Italians, Tyrol will return

Without war or objection”

فذي فيها قضاء النسخ

محتوم فلا يعصى

“And Poland will fold

Into Poland after vowing”

إلى الطليان تيرول

بلا حرب لها الرجعى

“And justice will reunite it

After despair and affliction”

وبولند إلى البولن

د من بعد النوى تضوى

“And some Hungarians will see

Withdrawal as best”

ويحي شملها عدل

عقيب اليأس والبلوى

“And other peoples besides those counted

Will distance themselves from its rule”

وقوم مجر عنها

يرون المنتأى أولى

“And Germans with deprivation”

“And separation it deserved”

وأقوام سوى من عد

دوا عن حكمها تنأى

“So we will establish a union”

“And the division by which it failed”

وجرمان بحرمان

وتفريق غدت تجزى

“And fining the people of evil,”

“Ruse and claim”

فنقيم لمجموع

وتشتيت به تخزى

“And exposing the deception of one”

“Who deceives people in piety”

وتغريم لأهل الشر

والحيلة والدعوى

“And demoting one whose weight

On the lands made them collapse”

وكشف المكر عن عات

يغش الناس بالتقوى

“And rebuilding and organizing”

“And spreading knowledge in the world”

وحط من مكوث عن

بلاد ثقلها أوهى

“And watering the oppressed, so end”

“The armies and prisoners”

وتعمير وترتيب

ونشر العلم في الدنيا

“They returned from ruin”

“Like an imaginary tale told with pleasure”

وسقيا للألى فكوا

جيوش الجند والأسرى

“When they followed the rule of an aggressive tyrant”

“Who said that right belongs to the mighty”

هم ردوا عن الأحرا

ر كابوسا حكى رضوى

“And the rule nearly became one”

“Of medieval times dictated to us”

إذا لوا حكم طاغ قا

ل إن الحق للأقوى

“So if an upright one stood”

“For the people of evil”

وكاد الحكم حكم الأع

صر الوسطى لنا يتلى

“Throughout the life of the living”

فلا قامت لأهل الشر
