The muezzin in Damascus disturbs me
With his shouts, I wish he hadn't spoken
If the Creator of his voice could hear
His screams, the voice of the weary would wail
He calls all night with pleading supplications
As if hungry, lost or a fool
And speaks words he cannot grasp the essence of
Believing he will not be answered unless he strains his throat
And imagines that God will heed his screams
Or that if he didn’t call out loud, he won’t provide
How can one steal a moment from
The specter of al-Karaa and its unsparing muezzins?
Jozet, you cheated me with a cheap room
A muezzin, a nuisance and a pounding
You moved me from my room to a hovel
And tricked me, O wicked hotel owner
So every night you shall have my curse
Whenever a muezzin calls out in the night
