عوذت بالله إمام العصر

علامة الدنيا قريع الدهر

I seek refuge in Allah, imam of the age

Sign of the world, jewel of time

اليازجي الشيخ رب النثر

من حاسد وحاقد ذي مكر

Al-Yaziji, the sheikh, lord of prose

From an envious and hateful plotter

فأي بحر من بحور الشعر

لما يغص فيه للقط الدر

So which sea of poetry

Does the pearl not swell within

وأي علم ليس فيه يجري

جرى كريم سابق في الكر

And which knowledge does not flow

The course of a noble preceding star

وأي لفظ كالنجوم الزهر

لم يك طوع نهيه والأمر

And which words like shining stars

Were not obedient to his prohibition and order

إنشاوه الفائق كل حزر

ذرى على البديع والمعري

His transcending creation beyond all guessing

It flows over rhetoric and eloquence

كأن ماء اللطف فيه يسري

أو انه نسيم عرف الزهر

As if the water of grace flows in it

Or it is a breeze from the aroma of flowers

أو الامام من شعاع الفجر

صاغ عقودا تزدري بالتبر

Or the imam from the rays of dawn

Formed necklaces that mocks coral

في كل قول وبكل سطر

كم آية يوحي وكم من سر

In every saying and every line

How many signs it inspires and how many secrets

يقول من يذوق أي خمر

يدير إبراهيم دون وزر

It says, whoever tastes any wine

Ibrahim walks without a burden

قد تركت أهل النهى في سكر

وضمخت أفواههم بالعطر

It has left the people of prohibition intoxicated

And wet their mouths with perfume

فأي در ليس في ذا البحر

وأي فضل ليس في ذا الحبر

So which gem is not in this sea

And which virtue is not in this ink

وأي معنى من معاني السحر

يند عن أستاذنا بالحصر

And which meaning from the meanings of magic

Competes with our teacher to the extent

ان يرفع الملوك قصد الفخر

مدينة أو معلما للنصر

That it makes kings aim for pride

A city or a symbol of victory

أو يجمعوا لمجدهم في قصر

زينة كل بلدة وقطر

Or they gather for their glory in a palace

Adornment of every country and land

أو ينعموا يوما على ذي فقر

بنعمة قصد الثنا والشكر

Or they grant one day to the poor

A gift aiming for praise and gratitude

فإنما الأستاذ قصد الأجر

وبغية النفع الجزيل البر

For the professor aims for reward

And for the sake of great benevolence

بنى لأهل الفضل اغنى مصر

في نجمة الرائد عدن الدر

He built the richest Egypt

For the people of virtue in the star of the guide, Eden of jewels

بل جمع الدنيا لهم في سفر

اضحى محيط مجرها والبر

But he collected the world for them on a journey

It became the circumference of its expanse and land

مع جوها إلى النجوم الزهر

إلى اقاصي ما جرى في فكر

With its atmosphere to the shining stars

To the furthest extents of what was conceived in thought

فهو كتاب ما له من نظر

وما له طي ليوم النشر

For it is a book that has no equal

And no folding on the day of unfolding

يبقي لقطب العلم فحر العصر

ذكرا مجيدا يا له من ذكر

It keeps for the pole of knowledge, the free man of the age

A glorious mention, what a mention

ووصفه فوق اقتدار قدري

ومدحه فوق مقام شعري

And its description beyond the power of fate

And its praise beyond the position of my poetry

فالله يوليه مديد العمر

فهو لأهل الفضل خير ذخر

So may Allah grant him a long life

For he is the best treasure for the people of virtue
