1. لست أنسى عهد ليل قريب

    زارني فيه خليلٌ أريب

    I shall not forget the night of a dear friend

    Who visited and entertained me with strange tales

  2. بحسن الوصف بحذق عجيب

    وله في الشعر ذوقٌ سليم

    Describing beautifully with excellent skill

    And whose poetry taste is sound and sublime

  3. بات يروي لي غريب السمر

    فكأني سامعٌ للنديم

    He told me wondrous stories till dawn

    As if I were listening to a charming minstrel

  4. قاللي جارٌ حسودٌ غيور

    أبدا من حول ختلى يدور

    A jealous nosy neighbor told me

    He always wanders aimlessly around

  5. حرت في استعطاف هذا النفور

    لم أكن أعلم أن اللئيم

    I tried to appease his unreasonable anger

    Not knowing this villain

  6. حاسدٌ لي فهو حيث استقر

    لذوي الفضل عدوّ خصيم

    Was envious of me and settled

    As a foe of the virtuous and wise

  7. فسعى بي عند قاضي البلد

    زاعما أني شديد اللدد

    So he went to the town judge

    Claiming I am extremely violent

  8. ليس ينجو من لساني أحد

    فإن استحسن رأيا قويم

    No one is safe from my sharp tongue

    If you like a strong opinion

  9. فليكن بالسجن أو بالسفر

    قاضيا فللذنب ذنبي عظيم

    Punish him with jail or exile

    For my sin is indeed tremendous

  10. فرأى القاضي الحكيم الرزين

    أن بثّ الحكم قبل اليقين

    The wise and judicious judge

    Saw that ruling without certainty

  11. ليس حزما من بصير رصين

    فدعاني شأن قاض حليم

    Is not the way of a discerning sage

    So he called me, as a forbearing judge would

  12. كي يرى صحة ما قد هذر

    ذلك الوغد الحسود الدميم

    To verify the nonsense

    That envious scoundrel spewed

  13. وحكى ما عدّد المفتري

    من ذنوب أنا منها برى

    And repeated the supposed sins

    I am completely innocent of

  14. ودعا من كان في المحضر

    لاستماعي بعد قول الغريم

    And asked those present

    To hear me after my opponent's talk

  15. فاشرأبّ الجمع ممن حضر

    ليراني ايّ قرد زنيم

    The gathered crowd was eager

    To see what stupid monkey I might be

  16. قلت ياذا الحاكم العادل

    قد وشى بي عندك العاذل

    I said: O just judge

    This accuser has maligned me

  17. ظنّ هذا الحاسد الجاهل

    حطّ قدري بعلاه زعيم

    That ignorant envious fool

    Thought to lower my status as a leader

  18. فابتغى ثلبي وكيدي نذر

    وهو ينوي الشر لي من قديم

    And plotted my demise

    With evil intent from of old

  19. والذي أوجب منه الضغن

    ليلةٌ مرت لنا في الزمن

    The reason for his resentment

    Was a night in days gone by

  20. مع صحب من كرام الوطن

    أطرأوا نثري وشعري النظيم

    When I was with fine gentlemen

    Who appreciated my prose and verse

  21. ثم قالوا أنت ربّ الغرر

    فصف الجاهل ثم العليم

    And said: You are a cave of treasures

    Describe the ignorant and the wise

  22. قلت رب الجهل من يذهب

    وهو في تخليطه معجب

    I said: The epitome of ignorance

    Is one who believes, completely deluded

  23. أن جدّ الناس إذ ينسبُ

    نسل قردٍ هو نعم الحميم

    That humans descended

    From the lineage of apes, what a dear friend!

  24. فانظروا يا خير أهل النظر

    كيف عار الجهل عارٌ عميم

    Just look, O best of all who look

    How the disgrace of ignorance is all-encompassing

  25. ثم إذ كنت أسوق الحديث

    قد تصدّى لي هذا الخبيث

    As I continued my talk

    This scoundrel challenged me

  26. قائلا هذا كلامٌ غثيث

    باردٌ في جنب قول الحكيم

    Saying this is worthless drivel

    Next to the words of the wise

  27. قلت من ذاك وماذا ذكر

    قال إنّ الفكر مني عقيم

    I asked who said that and what was mentioned

    He said my thoughts are fruitless

  28. فانبرى من كان في المجلس

    من كرام الأصل والأنفس

    Then those present,

    Noble in origin and spirit

  29. لحسود فاسد المغرس

    ورموه بالملام الأليم

    Scolded that envious rotted tree

    With harsh rebukes

  30. ثم قالوا لا يعيب القمر

    نبح كلب وهو بدر تميم

    And said the moon is not shamed

    By the barking of a dog, though it be full

  31. عند هذا شقّ ذاك الزحام

    يافعٌ كالغصن غضّ القوام

    At this the crowds parted

    And a youth slender like a sapling

  32. ثم نادى بفصيح الكلام

    إي ورب العرش هذا الرجيم

    Called out eloquently

    Yes, by the Lord of the Throne, this villain

  33. حاسدٌ يفسد بين البشر

    بل عدوّ للنبيل الكريم

    Is envious and causes rifts between people

    Rather he is a foe of the noble and generous

  34. كنت أهوى ذات طرف كحيل

    ما لها بين الغواني مثيل

    I was infatuated with a gazelle-eyed beauty

    Without parallel among the lovely ladies

  35. وهي لا تختار مني بديل

    فوشى بي ذا الحسود الكظيم

    And she would not choose me over another

    So this odious envious one maligned me

  36. فأرتني من جفاها سقر

    بعد ما قد كنت أرجو النعيم

    And caused her to spurn me

    After I had hoped for bliss

  37. بعد هذا قام شيخٌ جليل

    من ذوي القدر النبيه النبيل

    After this, a respected elder

    Of esteemed noble lineage

  38. قال لا بدع لوغب ثقيل

    غار من هذ الغلام الوسيم

    Said there is no surprise that a vulgar lout

    Would envy this handsome youth

  39. بل عجيبٌ كيف بي قد غدر

    حاسدا حرمة شيخ هشيم

    But it is strange how he betrayed me

    Jealously harming the sanctity of this aged man

  40. ذاك أني زرت يوما صديق

    هو عندي بمقام الشقيق

    It happened when I visited a dear friend

    As close as a sibling to me

  41. فاحتفى بي كالمحب الشفيق

    واقتفاه كلّ حرّ صميم

    He welcomed me warmly like a caring lover

    And all the honorable attended with me

  42. كان في مجلسه المعتبر

    حرمة للسن أو للزعيم

    In his esteemed gathering

    Were those respected for age or status

  43. وعقيد اللؤّم هذا الحسود

    كان يرميني بعين الكنود

    But this envious fiend

    Kept giving me the evil eye

  44. فغدا يهزأ بين الشهود

    بي كأني في ضلال أهيم

    Then the next day he mocked me

    Among the witnesses as if I were lost and confused

  45. يوهم الأصحاب أن الكبر

    لم يدع لي غير لب سقيم

    Giving the impression to my companions

    That old age left me with no wit

  46. وأنا أعجب من فعله

    وازدرا قدري من مثله

    I was astonished at his deed

    And diminishing my worth to the likes of him

  47. دون ذنب لي سوى جهله

    فرأيت البعد عن ذا اللئيم

    When I had no crime except his ignorance

    So I deemed it best to avoid that villain

  48. خير ما يفعله ذو الحذر

    فهو للفضل غريم خصيم

    For keeping away is what the prudent do

    When faced with a foe of virtue and enemy of the distinguished

  49. وهو إن قيل فلانٌ ريح

    قال هذا خبر لم يصح

    If it is said so-and-so is of good repute

    He will say this news is not true

  50. وتراه لو نفي أو ذبح

    لا يرى ذلك رزا جسيم

    And if you inform him of a murder or calamity

    He will not consider that a great loss

  51. مثلما لو جئته بالخبر

    عن غنى أحرزته أو نعيم

    Just as if you brought news

    Of wealth or blessings attained

  52. وإذا استرضيته يغضب

    وإذا صدّقته يكذب

    If you try to please him, he'll be angry

    And if you agree with him, he'll lie

  53. وهو إن أطربته يندبُ

    حذرا من أن يسرّ الكليم

    And if you entertain him, he'll complain

    Fearing the happy one might be too cheerful

  54. فسرورُ الخلق لا يغتفر

    عند هذا المتعدّي الأثيم

    So the joy of people is unforgivable

    To this transgressing sinner

  55. عند ذا نادى به الحاكم

    أيهذا الحاسد الظالم

    At this the judge called out:

    O envious unjust one

  56. ما لما قدّمته راحم

    قد قضى الشرع المنيف الكريم

    What mercy has the law,

    The noble and generous sharī'ah, ruled out?

  57. قتل من يؤذي لكي يعتبر

    إنّ في قتلك أجراً عظيم

    Killing you would set an example

    For your murder is a tremendous reward
