1. دع عنك صهباء الدساكر

    وإلى بيوت الدرس بادر

    Leave behind the cups of wine,

    And hasten to the houses of study.

  2. فلأنت في عصر تفر

    د بالمعارف والمآثر

    For you live in an era of splendor,

    Brimming with knowledge and achievements.

  3. قد حاز فيه الغرب غا

    يات السباق بلا مشاجر

    The West has attained the farthest goals

    In this race, without conflict.

  4. قطر علا أهلوه اس

    مى ذروة فيها المفاخر

    Their banner flew high, filled with pride

    At the pinnacle of glory.

  5. فعلومهم بلغت إلى

    حد تحار به الخواطر

    Their sciences have reached

    A point that baffles the mind.

  6. بحثوا عن الأجرام في الا

    فلاك وانتبثوا المغاور

    They probed the celestial spheres

    And unearthed what lies beneath the earth.

  7. وترصدوا سير النجو

    م وراقبوا أعلى الدوائر

    They observed the course of the stars

    And the highest planetary orbits.

  8. سيروا البحار وحللوا

    ما في الوجود من العناصر

    They sailed the seas and analyzed

    All elements of existence.

  9. والكهرباء بجدهم

    اضحى بها ذو اللب حائر

    Electricity, through their effort,

    Has become perplexing to the wise.

  10. جاءت بما شده العقو

    ل عجائبا وسبى النواظر

    It has brought wonders that captivate minds

    And dazzle sights.

  11. والكيمياء بدت بوج

    ه في الحقائق لا يخامر

    Chemistry has uncovered

    Truths in phenomena, unambiguously.

  12. قد هام في أسرارها

    من بعد جابر الف جابر

    It has delved into its secrets

    Since the days of Jabir after Jabir.

  13. نظروا إلى ما دق مم

    ا ليس تدركه البواصر

    They have examined the infinitesimal

    Beyond the grasp of eyes.

  14. درسوا الجماد مع النبا

    ت ومنهما عرفو المصادر

    They have studied inanimate matter and plants

    And from them uncovered the sources.

  15. نظروا إلى الحيوان في

    انواعه نظرات فاكر

    They have observed animals in all their kinds

    With thoughtful insights.

  16. حتى إذا عرفوا طبي

    عته وما طوت المشاعر

    When they understood their nature

    And what feelings they harbor,

  17. عمدوا إلى تشريحه

    وهناك كم شقت مرائر

    They proceeded to dissect them -

    How many tears have been shed!

  18. نشروا الرسوم الدارسا

    ت وكل مطوي ودائر

    They publicized illustrated studies

    Of every tissue and cycle.

  19. قد زعزعوا أهرام مص

    ر وفتشوا تلك المقابر

    They have shaken the pyramids of Egypt

    And ransacked those tombs.

  20. فرأوا بها آثار من

    قدموا من الناس الاكبار

    They found in them relics

    Of eminent ancient peoples.

  21. واستخدموا لمنافع ال

    تأريخ هاتيك الذخائر

    They used those treasures

    To benefit the science of history.

  22. وعن الحقائق زحزحوا

    سترا من الأوام ساتر

    They lifted the veil of myths

    That had obscured the truth for centuries.

  23. قد خططوا سطح البسي

    طة والبحار مع الجزائر

    They mapped the surface of the globe,

    The seas and the islands.

  24. والبعد قاسوا والعلو

    وعامرا منها وغامر

    They measured distances and altitudes,

    Cultivated deserts and crossed wild terrains.

  25. وبابرة القطب اهتدوا

    في البحر والديجور كافر

    At the poles they found their way

    On seas and on ice caps.

  26. وجلوا خفيات الطبي

    عة فاستبانت كالظاهر

    They uncovered the secrets of nature

    So the hidden became manifest.

  27. والسحر قد اضحى حدي

    ث خرافة أو قول هاذر

    Sorcery has become a myth

    Or idle, senseless talk.

  28. قاسوا الفضاء وقربوا ال

    أقصى وقد فشل المكابر

    They measured space and neared

    The farthest limit, humbling the arrogant.

  29. قد حلقوا في الجو بال

    منطاد تحليق الكواسر

    They flew in the sky like falcons

    In hot air balloons.

  30. والبرق قد قادوه بالا

    سلاك يعنو للأوامر

    They harnessed lightning to cables

    To obey their commands.

  31. قد سخروه بحمل من

    طوق الرسائل والدفاتر

    It carries their communications

    And books across its back.

  32. فأطاعهم ولذلك اس

    تغنوا به عن كل طائر

    Thus they had no more need

    For any bird as courier.

  33. قد اسمعوك ندا البعي

    د بالة من صنع ماهر

    They enabled you to hear

    Distant voices through the telephone,

  34. قد هندسوا وبنوا بنا

    يات لهم شادت مفاخر

    An invention of a skilled craftsman.

    They engineered and constructed

  35. رصفوا الحجارة في البحا

    ر وفوقها شادوا معابر

    Edifices that stand proudly.

    They paved roads across the seas

  36. نقلوا البحار إلى القفا

    ر وفوقها شادوا معابر

    And built bridges above them.

    They transported the seas to deserts

  37. ومراكب قد راح يج

    ريها البخار وليس ماخر

    And built bridges over them.

    Ships powered by steam

  38. جابوا الفلاة على عجا

    ل قد جرت جري البواخر

    Now sail without oars or sails.

    They crossed deserts on trains

  39. خرقوا الجبال لسيرها

    وعلى الوهاد بنوا قناطر

    Speeding like ships.

    They bored through mountains

  40. واستنبطوا للطبع آ

    لات تدور على محاور

    And built dams across valleys.

    They invented mechanical printing presses

  41. فإذا تفحّصت العما

    رة والتجارة فحص خابر

    That turn on axles.

    If you examine their architecture

  42. وإلى الحياكة والصبا

    ة والدباغة بتّ ناظر

    And commerce closely,

    Their industries, tanning,

  43. وإذا تأملت الفلز

    بعيد ما صاغوه باهر

    And dyeing - reflect!

    If you observe their metalwork -

  44. من كل آنية تقر

    بحسن صنعتها النواظر

    How exquisite what they have wrought!

    Vessels of such fine craftsmanship

  45. لا بد منها للمنا

    فع والتجمل في الحواضر

    That dazzle the eyes.

    All are essential amenities

  46. ايقنت ان الشرح ليس

    يفي ولست عليه قادر

    And luxuries of civilization.

    You will be certain that words cannot suffice,

  47. في النسج فاقوا غيرهم

    فتخال صوفهم حرائر

    And I cannot do justice to describe them.

    In textiles they surpassed all others -

  48. ولباسهم وفراشهم

    هذا وثير ذاك فاخر

    Imagine their wool like silk!

    Their clothing and carpets -

  49. فإذا اتيت بلادهم

    الفيت فيها العيش ناضر

    Some are simple, others ornate.

    When you visit their countries,

  50. جمعت شوارعهم احا

    سن كل شيء كان نادر

    You will find prosperous living.

    Their streets bring together

  51. فبيوت الحان بها

    تشدو الفيان على المزاهر

    The finest of everything rare.

    There are music houses,

  52. وديار لهو يلتقي

    فيها المباكر والمسامر

    Where songs are composed with joy.

    Abodes of revelry, where

  53. ورياض أنس ترتعي

    فيها السباع مع الجآذر

    Carousers and drinkers gather.

    Gardens of companionship,

  54. وديار تمثيل بها

    أدب لأرباب الخواطر

    Where predators and prey coexist.

    Theaters showing

  55. تلقى الذين سمعت في ال

    تأريخ عنهم والدفاتر

    Refinement for the reflective.

    You see those whose tales

  56. وترى ضروب عوائد

    وملابس عبرا لفاكر

    Fill history books and records.

    You witness customs and attire

  57. رفعوا لصوت الحق في

    أوطانهم أعلى المنابر

    That inspire deep thought.

    They gave voice to the call of truth

  58. وأضا لهم صبح اليقي

    ن وبات ليل الشك دابر

    From the highest platforms.

    To them dawned the light of conviction

  59. وعلى التساوي في الحقو

    ق مشى الأكابر والأصاغر

    While the night of doubt vanished.

    The great and small progressed

  60. ساروا على نهج العدا

    لة لم يطيقوا حكم جائر

    On equal footing and rights.

    They walked the path of justice -

  61. نقضوا مباني المستبد

    بن العتاة ذوي الكبائر

    They could not bear tyranny.

    They tore down the structures

  62. ممن يسوم الناس خس

    فا ليس تزجره الزواجر

    Of absolute despots steeped in sin.

    Who made people taste

  63. جعلوا التقدم في الأمو

    ر لكل ندب لا يخامر

    Humiliation, undeterred by censure.

    They enabled advancement, based on merit,

  64. وتبرأوا سقيا لهم

    من كل محتال وماكر

    Unmarred by double-dealing and fraud.

    They joined hands to further

  65. وعلى الولا وتقدم الأ

    وطان قد عقدوا الخناصر

    Their nations and raise their banners.

    They accomplished every remarkable feat,

  66. وأتوا بكل غريبة

    أعيت وحقك كل ساحر

    Confounding sorcerers and magicians.

    If the ancient Greeks and Romans,

  67. لو شامها اليونان وال

    رومان ارباب المآثر

    Masters of glory, witnessed this,

    Or the earliest Egyptians,

  68. أو أهل مصر الأقدمو

    ن ذوو المعارف والمفاخر

    Learned and proud,

    You would have seen them fall

  69. لرأيتهم خروا إلى الا

    ذقان للرجل المعاصر

    In homage to the people of this era.

    The meaning of the verse would be realized:

  70. وزكنت معنى القول كم

    ترك الأوائل للأواخر

    "The first age has left to the last."

    Their status has declined

  71. ما أن تحيط بما أتت

    ه علومهم ابيات شاعر

    While you have risen in prominence.

    Yet you are distracted

  72. ذا شأنهم اضحى وأن

    ت غدوت تسحب ذيل عائر

    By futile matters and sensual pleasures.

    You conceal sorrow, but God knows

  73. تلهو ببعض خزعبلا

    ت والتسر منك ظاهر

    What your hearts conceal.

    You claim it is predetermined fate -

  74. تخفي الاسى والله يع

    لم ما اكنته الضمائر

    To this you have resigned.

    My deluded friend, this talk

  75. وتقول حكم مقدر

    وعليه قد أمسيت صابر

    Is only the words of the lost.

    Do not blame destiny for your own doing;

  76. يا أيها المغرور ما

    ذا القول الا قول خاسر

    God does not wish evil upon people, nor is He unjust.

    Such resignation, fear, and cowardice in you

  77. تعزوا إلى الاقدار حك

    ما من فعالك كان جارئ

    Are truly witnessed by clear evidence.

    If you neglect your rights by sleeping,

  78. والله ليس يريد شر

    را بالأنام وليس غادر

    None but you will be awake to defend them.

    And if you are wronged, none but your resolve

  79. هذا الخنوع وذا الخمو

    ل وكل جبن فيك خادر

    Will come to your aid.

    Through ignorance you have become

  80. حقا شهود عدل

    نمت عليك بها الظواهر

    A proverb, exemplifying fools.

    It is said "Zayd has related, in his ignorance,

  81. إن عن حقوقك نمت فاء

    لم لن يكون سواك ساهر

    The ways of the uncouth."

    They are a people in whom young and old

  82. وإذا ظلمت فما لظل

    مك غير عزم منك ناصر

    Are stunted, and so remain ever small.

    Discord and intolerance are pleasing to them -

  83. بالجهل بت لدى الملا

    مثلا من الأمثال سائر

    Their hearts know no serenity.

    In their ignorance they cling to absurd beliefs

  84. فيقال زيد قد حكى

    في جهله بعض البرابر

    And abandon what is truly precious.

    They pride themselves on envy and hatred -

  85. قوم لهم ينمى الصغا

    ر فهم لذا قوم الأصاغر

    This is their glory!

    With enmity and estrangement they boast,

  86. بسوى التفرق والتحا

    مل لا تطيب لهم خواطر

    Harboring animosity.

    By their own doing, they are left

  87. وتمسكوا جهلا بأع

    راض وقد تركوا الجواهر

    With no excuse among people.

    Oh companion, the cycles of fate

  88. حسد واحقاد بها

    يتفاخرون على المفاخر

    Have been unkind to us.

    He who neglects the pursuit of rights

  89. وتباغض وتباعد

    في ذاك كل بات فاكر

    Will lose, and so will you.

    I wish my people would remember

  90. وبما جنت ايديهمو

    ما أن لهم في الناس عاذر

    And not fade from memory among men.

    If only they followed the example

  91. دارت علينا يا لصح

    بي في الورى شر الدوائر

    Of their honorable ancestors.

    They were supreme in knowledge,

  92. من نام عن طلب الحقو

    ق فانه وابيك خاسر

    Their reputation soared through the horizon.

    They were supreme in wisdom,

  93. يا ليت قومي يذكرو

    ن فلم يخب في الناس ذاكر

    Attaining exalted wisdom and triumph.

    They were supreme in conquest,

  94. أويتهم ساروا على

    منهاج اجداد هزابر

    Vanquishing lands with perseverance.

    The hooves of their steeds paved

  95. فهم الألى في العلم اض

    حى صيتهم في الأفق طائر

    Distant deserts and settled lands.

    Their armies crushed the fortresses

  96. وهم الألى بالحزم قد

    بلغوا العلا والحزم ظافر

    Of past tyrannical giants.

    Their might toppled

  97. وهم الألى فتحوا المما

    لك فتح غلاب مثابر

    The dynasties of Caesars and Kings.

    Their prestige tamed

  98. طرقت حوافر خيلهم

    اقصى البوادي والحواضر

    Kings of the earth and of bygone eras.

    When will I see the esteemed nation

  99. وجنودهم دكت حصو

    ن الغابرين من الجبابر

    Sunk to the depths of mediocrity?

    When will the trusted tidings reach me,

  100. وببأسهم قد دوّخوا

    دول القياصر والأكاسر

    Heralding the first signs?

    Seek the heights of glory -

  101. وعنت لهيبتهم ملو

    ك الأرض والأمم الغوابر

    They guide all who are lost.

    Emulate them, if you cannot

  102. فمتى ارى الوطن المفد

    ى عن محيا الفضل سافل

    Match them - the distinction is clear.

    Our King Abdulhamid aids you -

  103. ومتى توافي بالأما

    ني لي بواكير البشائر

    He is a pillar of support and glory.

    A King in whom culminate

  104. هبوا إلى طلب المعا

    لي فهي تهدي كل حائر

    All praise and achievements.

    A King of wisdom and resolve

  105. وتشبهوا ان لم تكو

    نوا مثلهم فالفرق ظاهر

    Before whom the mighty kneel.

    From us he receives only praise

  106. ومليكنا عبد الحمي

    د لكم معين بل مظاهر

    And gratitude.

  107. ملك اليه تنتمي

    كل المحامد والمآثر

  108. ملك لديه كل ذي

    حزم وزعزم بات صاغر

  109. لم تلق إلا حامدا

    منا اياديه وشاكر
