  1. إلى وجهك الوضّاح يشتاق مغرم

    له بمعانيك الحسان ترنّم

    To your radiant face, a lover yearns,

    Enchanted by your beautiful meanings, he sings.

  2. يناجيك أحيانا ويعتب تارة

    ومنك بطيب القرب ما زال يحلم

    At times he whispers to you, at others complains,

    And still dreams of your sweet company.

  3. وهذي إلى الأستاذ سارت كغيرها

    تهنّئه بالعام والسعد يبسم

    This poem, like others, is for the professor-

    Congratulations on the year, may your smile blossom.

  4. وما بعد الأستاذ عن قلب مخلص

    إذا حلّ في مصر يحلّ ويبرم

    The loyal heart is never far from the professor,

    Whether settled in Egypt or roaming.

  5. به اعتزّ أهل الفضل شرقا ومغربا

    وتعنو له أهرامها والمقطّم

    The learned of East and West take pride in him.

    Pyramids and ruins long for him.

  6. ملكت زمات العلم غير مدافع

    فإنّك في الدنيا الإمام المقدّم

    He has ruled the eras of knowledge, undisputed,

    For you are the foremost imam in this world.

  7. وإنّك في ذا العصر أشعر شاعر

    وأكتب مخلوق يخطّ وأعم

    In this age, you are the most eloquent poet,

    The most literary being writing and blind.

  8. تري النيل بحرا منك بالدر قد طمى

    لورّاده عذبٌ وللضدّ علقم

    You see the Nile as a sea, its pearls covering

    Its sweet water for friends, bitter for foes.

  9. وللصّحب ملك الأنس واللطف والوفا

    وبأسٌ شديد للعداة وضيغم

    For companions you possess charm, kindness and loyalty.

    For enemies, you have formidable force and rigor.

  10. وما أنا مداح ولست مداهنا

    ولكن صفات فيك تملي فأنظم

    I am no flatterer, nor sycophant,

    But your qualities compel me to compose.

  11. ولو كنت في أقصى البلاد مخيما

    لوافاك شعري وهو بالود مفعم

    If I were camped in the furthest land,

    My poetry would find you, filled with affection.

  12. وأيّ مكان تصطفيه مكرّم

    وفي كل قطر أنت فرد معظّم

    You are unique and revered in every place,

    Honored in every country.

  13. أبثّكَ من أشواق قلبي بعضها

    وأنت بحال الوجد مني أفهم

    I convey some of the longing in my heart,

    And you understand my passion most keenly.

  14. وفي كل فنّ أنت أدرى وأعلم

    بقيت بقاء الدهر تسمو وتنعم

    In every art, you know most and best,

    Remaining lofty and content for eternity.

  15. ولا زالت الأعياد فيك مواسما

    تسرّ بها ما كرّ عامٌ وموسمُ

    The seasons in you are always celebrations,

    Gladdening each passing year and time.
