1. أمعروف قد واسيت قلب المتيم

    وداويت جرحا فت مهجة مريم

    I knew you would comfort the heart of the lover

    And heal a wound that tore open the chest of Maryam

  2. عهدتك يا رب القريض منظما

    قلائد درّ لا مجبر اعظم

    I entrusted you, O Lord of eloquence, to compose

    Necklaces of pearls, nothing greater

  3. ومنزل آيات البلاغة والحجى

    فها انت طب ما استعان بمرهم

    And a residence of miracles of rhetoric and proof

    So here you are, a remedy without need of ointment

  4. عرفت مكان السقم من نفس أيم

    فداويت منها كل جرح ببلسم

    You recognized where the sickness was from her own soul

    So you healed every wound in it with balm

  5. وان كنت لم تنشر من القبر بعلها

    فما انت عيسى كي تقول له قم

    And if you did not raise her husband from the grave

    You are not Jesus to say to him "Rise!"

  6. ولكن أولاد الأرامل كلهم

    يفدون منك اليوم أكرم ضرغم

    But all the sons of widows

    Are ransomed by you today, most generous of men

  7. وما انفردوا في ذاك بل كل منتم

    لعيسى غدا يفديك يا خير مسلم

    And they were not alone in this, but everyone who belongs

    To Jesus will ransom you tomorrow, O best of Muslims!

  8. جهرت بقول شف عن نفس عاقل

    كريم ابي لم يهب قول لوم

    You pronounced words "Heal your own rational soul"

    My noble father did not grant words of blame

  9. وقمت بعذر لا يرد لدى امرئ

    فقلت ضلال القوم ساق إلى الدم

    And you stood with an excuse no man can refute

    Saying "the people's misguidance led to blood"

  10. فقاموا بعار النهب والفتك وافتروا

    على الدين في تحليل كل محرم

    So they rose in the disgrace of pillage and murder and slandered

    The faith by making the unlawful lawful

  11. ضلال يجل الدين عنه وان من

    يعالن به للجهل والكفر ينتم

    Misguidance from which religion is absolved, though one

    Who champions it belongs to ignorance and unbelief

  12. إلى مريم وافيت معتذرا وما

    سواك اتى بالعذر غير مجمجم

    You came to Maryam with an excuse, and none

    Other than you came with an excuse, unprompted

  13. غلطت فقد وافى الولي بمثل ما

    اتيت وان الفضل للمتقدم

    You erred, and the guardian came with the like of what

    You brought, though virtue is for the first

  14. نعم يا ولي الدين قد كنت سابقا

    بعذر كما لو كنت أول مجرم

    Yes, O guardian of the faith, you were first

    With an excuse, as if you were the first offender

  15. وحاشاك يا قطب المكارم والنهى

    من الذنب لكن ذا كمال التكرم

    Far be it from you, O pillar of nobility and restraint

    From sin! But such is the perfection of nobility

  16. فانكما يا نابغي أمة لها

    قديم شفيع في ضلال ميمم

    For both of you, O eminent one of a nation which has

    An ancient intercessor in grave misguidance

  17. إذا ما الوف اجرمت بجهالة

    ففي كل لفظ منكما دية الدم

    If the intimate sins in ignorance

    In every word from you is the blood money for blood
