1. أهي الجنة التي وعد الله

    بها المتقين أم باريس

    Is this the Paradise that Allah promised

    The righteous, or is it Paris,

  2. وهو ورد على غصون تمشت

    أم بدور تنزلت وشموس

    With flowers hanging from its branches,

    Or blazing suns descending on it,

  3. أم هي الحور في مطارف خز

    أم غوان بين الرياض تميس

    Is it the huris in tents of satin,

    Or flirtatious beauties alluring Iblis,

  4. أم هي الظبيات أم غاويات

    ساحرات يغري بها ابليس

    With a thousand hues shining on fabrics,

    Or is it their glow that is felt,

  5. وبروق بالف لون على الحي

    طان تبدو أم ضؤها المحسوس

    With palaces adorned with feathers

    And everything desired by souls,

  6. وقصور تزينت برياش

    وحوت كل ما تحب النفوس

    Of food and luxuries and books

    And goblets shining like gems,

  7. من طعام ومقعد وكتاب

    وكؤوس تجلى بها الخندريس

    Or is it boutiques where oud is played

    And furnishings and clothes are sold,

  8. أم دكا كين يضرب العود فيها

    ويباع المفروش والملبوس

    And behind glass windows, boutiques

    Filled with exquisite wares,

  9. ووراء الزجاج في الف دكا

    ن الوف المتاع زاه نفيس

    Or pictures that captivate the mind,

    So fair that Burgess is humbled,

  10. أم تصاوير تلك تستلب

    اللب يعنو لحسنها البرجيس

    Rather, perfect copies made

    By a supreme artist of taste,

  11. بل عروض تنزهت عن مثال

    حاطها بالكمال ذوق رئيس

    Without excess, deception or fraud,

    Are those wonders or wheeled vehicles

  12. ليس فيها قول لليت ولا في

    صنعها خدعة ولا تدليس

    Measuring lands without horses,

    Or palaces whispering,

  13. وسهأم هاتيك أم عجلات

    دون خيل عرض البلاد تقيس

    Transporting creatures for cheap fares,

    While seated in comfort,

  14. وسواها تسير في عرض الشا

    رع كالبرق أم قصور تميس

    And are these gardens or a parade

    Of hurs, or a place for weddings,

  15. ناقلات من الخلائق عشرا

    ت بادنى الاجور فيها جلوس

    With stars dimmed by lamps atop,

    Or are they suns giving it light,

  16. وبساتين هذه أم ممر ال

    حور أم ساحة فيها التعريس

    And whichever way you turn, etiquette

    And beauty enchant souls,

  17. ونجوم قدر كبت فوق عم

    أم مصابيحها عليها شموس

    And gardens reminding of Eden's gardens

    That place now aged and this a bride,

  18. وترى كيفما توجهت ظرفا

    وجمالا تهيم فيه النفوس

    With thrones, and Sheba's queen beside them

    A sign she never imagined,

  19. وجنانا تنسيك ما قيل في جن

    ات عدن واليوم تلك القدموس

    With statues towering overhead

    Memphis would bow before this sight,

  20. تلك كانت يوما لقوم وقد اض

    حت عجوزا واليوم هذي عروس

    Are these creations or angels

    Whose beauty has captured Paris,

  21. وعروشا وأين بلقيس منها

    آية ما تخيلتها بلقيس

    Of marble and ivory, and in it an ode

    No beauty compares to this,

  22. ودمى فوق اعمد نصبوها

    لو رأتها لطأطأت ممفيس

    And the learned built statues

    Not for bones but minds to revere,

  23. ادى تلك أم ملائك حسن

    قد تدلت فعلقتها باريس

    And for great men, lofty buildings

    Without flaw or defect,

  24. من رخام كالعاج والظرف فيه

    منشد ما لذا الجمال مقيس

    They worshipped knowledge and beauty, and shone

    A nation where perfection lies,

  25. ولأهل العلوم شادوا تماثي

    لا لاعظامها تخر الرؤوس

    Thousands beneath Paris flow

    And thousands above soar,

  26. ولأرماسهم اقاموا بناء

    ساميا ليس يعتريه دروس

    And thousands of creatures move

    Or sit still through its quarters,

  27. عبدوا العلم والجمال واضحوا

    أمة عندها الكمال حبيس

    Thousands pursue vanity and folly

    While thousands find books as friends,

  28. فألوف من تحت باريس تجري

    والوف فوق الهواء تجوس

    Thousands hurry to churches

    Whenever bells call to prayer,

  29. وألوف من الخلائق في اح

    يائها سائرون أو هم جلوس

    And thousands rush to livelihood

    While all other pace is nonsense,

  30. وألوف تسعى للهو وقصف

    والوف لها الكتاب انيس

    And thousands on ships seem

    As if naught but rivers remain,

  31. والوف إلى الكنائس تجري

    كلما دق للصلاة الناقوس

    Schools filled with thousands

    And sciences taught in each,

  32. والوف تجري إلى الرزق جريا

    كل جري سواه جري هسيس

    Theaters like palaces

    While fraud builds facades,

  33. والوف على البواخر في النه

    ر كأن ما سواه درب طميس

    Eloquence and literature manifest

    Till Talees bows to them,

  34. وبيوت التعليم فيها الوف

    ولكل العلوم فيها دروس

    And industry attained perfection

    With inventions filling books,

  35. وبيوت التمثيل فيها قصور

    جنبها ما بنى الوجوه خسيس

    Palaces of kings are gathering places

    Where lamps and chandeliers glow,

  36. تتجلى فيها الفصاحة والأ

    داب حتى يعنو لها طاليس

    All ancient things display

    Their secrets to the keen of mind,

  37. والصناعات ثم حازت كمالا

    باختراع ما جاء فيه القاموس

    The creations of ancients revealed

    Safe from being sealed,

  38. وقصور الملوك أضحت مجامي

    عا وفيها القماط والناووس

    A palace that was once oppression's den

    Is now justice and law's domain,

  39. كل شيء من أقدم الدهر ثاو

    تنجلي للبيب منه طروس

    And palaces where knowledge rings

    Be the speaker pagan or priest,

  40. كل علم الماضين قد بان ما

    صنعوه فلم يصبه طموس

    So believers have no distinction

    From the heathens or sacred,

  41. رب قصر قد كان مرتع ظلم

    لأناس على هواها تسوس

    Rulers here are Jewish, Christian, Shia, Magus

    Justice equalized them all,

  42. فغدا للقضاء والعدل فيه

    صارخ أنا في فرنسا رئيس

    Knowledge is not sold for wealth

    Rather souls are given for it,

  43. وقصور يلقي على الناس فيها

    خطب العلم كافر أو قسيس

    None esteemed knowledge like them

    Or scorned wealth like they do,

  44. فهنا المؤمنون ليس لهم فر

    ق عن الكافرين أو تقديس

    None allied ignorance for centuries

    Like those who left it to rot,

  45. وهنا الحاكمون فيها يهود

    ونصارى وشيعة ومجوس

    Fortune divided fates, some blissful

    Others doomed and cursed,

  46. قد سما العدل في الحقوق لديهم

    وتساوى الرئيس والمرؤوس

    The lands too, some hellish swamps

    Others heavenly oasis,

  47. لا تباع العلوم فيها باموا

    ل ولكن لها تباع النفوس

    We vie in knowledge while they vie

    In guile and trickery,

  48. أينما سرت في شوارعها صا

    ح بك العلم مني التاسيس

    None circulated nonsense among them

    Like these peddlers of gossip,

  49. كل حسن تراه مني وعني

    وبدوني ضياؤها تغليس

    Nowhere did you walk except

    Knowledge called me its founder,

  50. ان عرشي فيها لعرش علي

    عبدته دون الورى باريس

    Any beauty seen is from me

    Without me, its light is darkness,

  51. لا تحيط اللغات طرا بوصف

    يرتديه جمالها المحسوس

    My throne in it, a lofty throne

    Paris worshipped over the world,

  52. شارد اللفظ عند نظمي مطيع

    ولدى وصفها عصي شموس

    Tongues cannot encompass its beauty

    Felt by senses and seen by eyes,

  53. كل ما في باريس شعر وحسن

    آية فتنة كمال نفيس

    Words desert me in my verse

    And defy me when describing it,

  54. كل ابنائها يذوق جمال ال

    علم حتى شريرهم والخسيس

    Everything in Paris is poetry and beauty

    A miracle, precious perfection,

  55. كل انثى لها من العلم والفض

    ل جمال تحنى لديه الرؤوس

    Everyone tastes the beauty of knowledge

    Even the wicked and vile,

  56. ليس في الغاويات من لا تذوق ال

    شعر حتى يقال نعم الجليس

    Every female has the merit of knowledge and virtue

    Heads bow to them in respect,

  57. كل عيب يمحى بباريق الا ال

    جهل فهو الثنار والتنجيس

    No coquette fails to appreciate poetry

    Blessed is such a companion!

  58. يتبارون في العلوم ورحنا

    نتبارى وعلمنا التلبيس

    Every flaw erased but ignorance

    It is hellfire and sacrilege,

  59. ليس من راجت الصحائف فيهم

    مثل من عندهم يروج الدسيس

    We vie in knowledge while they vie

    In cunning and trickery,

  60. ليس من عظموا مقام أولي العل

    م كمن عندهم تعز الفلوس

    Paris is not Paradise promised by God,

    But by its beauty almost seems so!

  61. ليس من حالف الجمود قرونا

    مثل من غادر الجماد يميس

  62. قسمت في الورى الحظوظ فبعض

    في سعود وبعضهم منحوس

  63. وكذاك البلاد منها جحيم

    بذوبها وبعضها فردوس
