وشبّ بأرض بوليفا

وجارتها على تخم

A dispute arose in Bolivia

Between two neighbors over land

نزاع آثر الخصما

ن فيه وساطة الحكم

Each opponent insisted

On having the case judged

فقالوا كلما يكفي

لفهم وجوه خلقهم

They said, let there be enough

To understand their motives

وظلوا يرقبون صدو

ر حكم مذهب الغمم

And they waited expectantly

For the cloudy judgment

ومر الشهر عقب الشه

ر والحكام في عقم

Month after month went by

With the judges in barrenness

وعقبى عصر ادمغة

تسيل الفهم كالدسم

Until an era of brilliant minds

That pour understanding like grease

قضوا بسفارة منهم

تعاين مركز الحرم

They decided to send a mission

To examine the site of discord

فسارت بعد تزويد

وتلقين ومحتزم

It journeyed fully equipped

And carefully instructed

وعادت بعد تغريب

يحاكي دهر ذي ألم

It returned after long absence

Like an epoch full of pain

وظلت بين إمهال

وتسويف إلى سأم

Remaining in procrastination

And delay until boredom

إلى أن سعر التسو

ف شر الحرب والضرم

Until the price of delay

Was the evil of war and destruction

ولما طالت البلوى

تنادى القوم للشيم

And when misery was prolonged

The people called for integrity

وقالوا عل أهل الحك

م ينعطفون للكرم

And said, perhaps the wise

Judges will show kindness

نعاودهم لعل خمي

ر رأي خلف صمتهم

When suddenly the high council

Broadcast its foolish judgment

إذا بالمجلس العالي

يذيع سخيف حكمهم

Summarized that the mission

Of knowledge and wisdom

ملخّصه بأن سفا

رة العرفان والحكم

Brought immense benefits

To the scholars, like blessings

أتت بفؤائد جلت

لدى العلماء كالنعم

But did not solve what

Was beyond the imagination of the wise

ولكن حل ما لم ي

ك في حسبان محتلم

For some of its members

Stars of injustice

وذلك أن بعضا من

ذويها أنجم الظلم

Whose knowledge streams overflowed

Confined their comprehension

طغت انهار علمهم

فقاتت وسع فهمهم

And some exceeded their understanding

Beyond the cosmos of their knowledge

وبعضهم تجاوز فه

مهم افلاك علمهم

So they came back with what

They had not preserved from those seeds

فىبوا بالذي لم يح

فظوا من تلكم التخم

And forgot why they had gone

Like those in panic

وأنسوا كل ما من أج

له رجعوا كمنهرم

Moreover without investigation

Or credible claim

على أنهم من غي

ر تحقيق ولا زعم

They saw truth as belonging

To the powerful, without doubt

يرون الحق للاقوى

بلا شك ولا جرم

The opponents poured on them

Something unlike blood

فصب عليهم الخصما

ن شيئا ليس كالديم

And said, if only you were mute

And the people deep in deafness

وقالا ليتكم خرس

وليت القوم في صمم

May God show no mercy to the lad

Who aids your injustice

ولا رحم الاله فتى

يعاونكم على الظلم

For you are people of destruction

And dispersion of unity

فانتم أهل تدمير

وتشتيت لملتئم

The shining nation launched

A war of vengeance and voracity

وشنّت أمّة الطليا

ن حرب الثأر والنهم

Against the Abyssinians, so they sought

Refuge with the fallen nations

على الحبشان فالتجأوا

إلى مخلوعة الأمم

And said, we are from you

And you are the canopy of protection

وقالوا إننا منكم

وانتم قبة الذمم

You are the Kaaba of character

And fairness and charity

وانتم كعبة العرفا

ن والانصاف والنعم

So speak your word to relieve

The hearing of the deaf

فقولوا قولكم يشفي

مسامع كل ذي صمم

And revive the dejected

And dispel the transgressor

وينعش كل مدحور

ويطرد كل مقتحم

You have witnessed the oppression

That has spread over us

وقد عاينتم ما ح

ل فينا من اذى عمم

This is your day to deter

Their tremendous sin

وهذا اليوم يومكم

لردع عظيم إثمهم

Soothe them with justification

And reasoning, well taken

فاغنوهم بتمهيل

وتعليل بمغتنم

Threaten them with condemnation

And warning, O you of integrity

ومنوّهم بتهويل

وانذار لمجترم

But they returned with glorification

And thanks, not sullen

فآبوا بين تهليل

وشكر غير منكتم

Can a promise or threat

Hold back an upright army?

وهل يدفع وعد أو

وعيد جيش مستقم

Can a warning restrain

The flood of rage and bitterness?

وهل يردع انذار

صبيب الغيظ والضرم

Can vengeance withhold one

Like me or my offspring?

وهل يقعد عن ثأر

كمي أو سليل كمي

So they tasted the slaying

Due reward for their betrayal

فذاقوا طعم تقتيل

جزاء قديم غدرهم

With undifferentiated bombardment

And inseparable blows

بنسف غير منفصل

وضرب غير منفصم

They cried, "Oh the horror of fate

That has brought us to doom

وصاحوا يا لهول الخط

ب بتنا في يد العدم

Where are the covenants of nations?

Where are our towering hopes?

فأين عهود أقوام

وأقيال ألي عظم

Where are the castles of aspirations

We built upon the peaks?

وأين صروح آمال

بنيناها على قمم

Where is justice, will it resurrect

The souls for reconstruction

وأين الحكم هل يبع

ث أرواحا إلى رمم

Will it revive the murdered

Truth between destruction and ruin?

وهل يحيي اصطبارا ما

ت بالتسويف والسأم

Answer, O leaders of earth

Nay, O anguish of pain

أماتَ الحق والانصا

ف بين الهدم والحمم

When suddenly a voice recited something

Resembling revelation that dropped from knowledge

أجيبوا يا دهاة الار

ض بل يا غصة الألم

Saying the judges, people of wisdom

And resolve, have ruled

إذا بالصوت يتلو شب

ه وحي حط من علم

That truth here is doubtful

Amidst this injustice

يقول قضى رجال الحك

م أهل العلم والهمم

For how can there be truth

Without witnesses of integrity?

بأن الحق مشكوك

به في هذه الظلم

The defeated have no rights

Even if sheltered in sanctuary

وكيف بين حق دو

ن أشهاد ذوي قيم

Oppression is rejected

By the judges and people of honor

ولا حق لمغلوب

ولو قد عاذ بالحرم

But nothing new under this sun

In the systems

وان الظلم يأباه

رجال الحكم والشمم

For truth belongs to the powerful

God's law since antiquity

ولكن لا جديد تح

ت هذي الشمس في النظم

Should we disobey God

Or rule by what He has ordained?

فإن الحق للقو

ة شرع الله من قدم

So the Abyssinians flooded them

With curses and abuse

أنعصي الله أم نقضي

بما قد خط بالقلم

And said, worst of all people

Are the Franks of the nations

فغمرهم بنو الحبشا

ن باللعنات والسخم

We are the noble Berbers

Of betrayal and ill omens

وقالواشر أهل الأر

ض قوم فرنجة الأمم

While you are the people of honor

And loyalty and charity

أنحن البربر الاجلا

ف أهل النكث والشؤم

Upon you is the curse

Of the Merciful, morning and night

وأنتم أمة الاشرا

ف أهل العدل والذمم

You have destroyed our kingdom

With deceit and trickery

عليكم لعنة الرحما

ن في الاصباح والظلم

You are the worst creatures

Created by the Creator of breath

أضعتم ملكنا بالمطل

ل والتغرير والبرم

May no eye shed a tear for you

Or foot walk in your favor

وانتم شر مخلوق

براه خالق النسم

And the scent of oil

Rose for the Turks from Rum

فلا اختلجت لكم عين

ولا سرتم على قدم

And there was no oil story

Spread among aggressors

وشم الترك ريح النف

ط يصعد من ربى إرم

The Turks possess a charm

Called the telescope in Persian

ولم تك قصة للنف

ط شاعت عند مقتحم

And called by us the trumpet

And sorcery for opponents

وللاتراك طرمذة

تسمى البلف بالعجمي

Spies brought them news

Without suspicion

وتدعى عندنا نفخا

وشعوذة لمختصم

They said, that is from Paris

From esteemed generous folk

وجاءتهم جواسيس

بنقل غير متهم

People we have ruled

With unassuming magic

فقالوا ذاك عن باري

ز عن صحب ذوي كرم

Before battle they defeated us

Without concealment

أناس قد ملكناهم

ببلف غير محتشم

Bullets of lead penetrated

Their bodies

فقبل الحرب ربوات

أدانونا بلا عتم

After battle they defeated us

With worthless weapons

سبكناها رصاصا قد

تغلغل في جسومهم

Until they enabled us

To destroy the Armenians

وعقب الحرب اغنونا

باسلحة بلا قيم

And we bid them farewell

With the death of some of their soldiers

إلى أن مكنونا من

هلاك ارامن التخم

Ask the free men what

We buried in their land

وودعناهم بفنا

ء قسم من جنودهم

They were neither angry nor complained

Proof of their might

سلوا أهل الرها عما

دفنا في جوارهم

They are obsessed with us, and if

We incline, in their blood

وما غضبوا ولا عتبوا

وذاك دليل بأسهم

The like is attracted to its like

And in us there is their form

لهم ولع بنا ولئن

ولفنا في دمائهم

They have no passion for us

But zeal for themselves

شبيه الشيء منجذب

وفينا بعض شكلهم

And if I call it envy

Then I have not erred in describing them

وليس لهم بنا شغف

ولكن غيرة بهم

For they have enmity

For the British, even if compensated in blood

وان سميتها حسدا

فلم تبعد بوصفهم

And feared the emergence of disparities

Like sheep over their sheep

فهم للانكلين عدى

ولو مجوا دما بدم

So they supported us with supplies

And aid like a womb

وخافوا ان تصير فرو

ق غنما فوق غنمهم

Without consideration of their army

Or the Armenians for shedding blood

فمدونا بأعتدة

وامداد كذي رحم

And said, apart from you destruction

So assault like an avenger

وما بالوا بعسكرهم

ولا بالارمن للفدم

Leave not one Armenian child

Or elderly brother

وقالوا دونكم إزمي

ر فاقتحموا كمنتقم

They found us quick to understand

And judged by their expulsion

ولا تدعوا من اليونا

ن طفلا أو أخا هرم

While we walk away from you

First, the allies, like protective jealousy

وجدوا نحن إستبو

ل واحتكموا بطردهم

And you will see our bounty

Follow bounty like blood

ونحن نسير عنكم أو

ل الحلفاء كالحشم

And when we settled in

The abode of security and sanctuary

وسوف ترون منا الغن

م يتلو الغنم كالديم

A messenger came to us from

Their side

ولما أن حللنا في

ربوع الأمن والحرم

With matching name, nickname

And appearance and tune

أتانا نحو أنقرة

رسول من جنابهم

We asked, what is this name? He said, nicknamed El-Wakhm

So we said, evil is the messenger

شفيع الاسم والكني

ة والسحنة والنغم

Who is silent

And we dictated to him a covenant

سألنا العلج ما ذا الاس

م قال كنيت بالوخم

Unlike theirs

And it was said the Turks

فقلنا قبح المرس

ل من بكم

Are rushing to aggression and vengeance

And falsely proclaimed

واملينا عليه نص

عهد غير عهدهم

That our brothers called to them from the seeds

Saying they suffer affliction

وقيل الترك مندفعو

ن للعدوان والنقم

From an enemy of their race

For that they asked their ally

وسرا لفقوا كذبا

سداه غير ملتحم

For their wronged right

Those of integrity said: this is

أذاعوا أن إخوانا

تنادوهم من التخم

The village of the opponent

Are they not since the distant epoch

يقاسون البلا من جو

ر عرش خصم جنسهم

In comfort and sanctuary?

Has the aroma of Arab honor

لذلك طالبوا ذات ال

حليفة حق منظلم

Smelled the wind of judgment and knowledge?

They answered: you are the heedless

فقال لهم ذوو الانصا

ف هذي قرية الخصم

Wandering in injustice

Is not this ally raising us

أليسوا منذ اقصى الده

ر في دعة وفي حرم

Above the plunder?

Do the people of greed convey to us

وهل شم الكرام العر

ب ريح الحكم والعلم

Then we spend the night like beasts?

We are not in the neighborhood

اجابوا انتم الاغفا

ل تخبطون في الظلم

Of the humpbacked and bitter sanctuary

But in the neighborhood of the French

أما هذي حليفهم

تعلونا على الغنم

Of gentleness and generosity

We share their gentleness

أيبلغنا بنو التامي

ن ثم نبيت كالبهم

And partake of their oil

Sometimes we threaten them

ولسنا في جوار المو

صل الحدباء والضرم

And sometimes, compassionate

We dredge the covenant of the wretched

ولكن في جوار بني

فرنسا اللطف والكرم

Franklin, so detestable

For their might dazzled him

نشاركمهم بلطفهم

ونشركهم بنفطهم

So he departed near-blind

The masses of the sick and diseased

وأحيانا نهددهم

وأحيانا ذوو رحم

Will assist us in their myriad colors

Ignorance of a ruler they appointed

وننبش عهدة الخنزي

ر فرنكلين ذي الوخم

Among people of integrity

We drive it as we wish

فقد بهرته هيبتنا

فامضى وهو شبه عم

So it recites revelation like an idol

Aiding us is a villain among us

وسوف تعيننا جمي

ة الاسقام والسخم

Like an opponent

We knew him long ago

بلوناها وفيها زم

رة الاغفال كالنعم

Among the silent

And the British ambassador assists

غباوة جاهل قد حك

موه في ذوي القيم

For the best conclusion

نسيرها كما نهوى

فتتلو الوحي كالصنم

يساعدنا خبيث عن

دنا منهم كمختصم

وكنا قد عهدناه

قديما من ذوي البكم

ويسعفه سفير الان
