1. لِأَيِّ صُروفِ الدَهرِ فيهِ نُعاتِبُ

    وَأَيَّ رَزاياهُ بِوِترٍ نُطالِبُ

    For which of Time's shifting turns shall we assign the blame, and for which of its tragedies exact vengeance now?

    He has passed, whose loss has stripped us of all endurance, though he was the bestower of patience when patience was far astray.

  2. مَضى مَن فَقَدنا صَبرَنا عِندَ فَقدِهِ

    وَقَد كانَ يُعطي الصَبرَ وَالصَبرُ عازِبُ

    He visits the foe beneath a sky of swirling battle-dust, wherein his spear-points shine as the piercing stars.

    The dust unveils him, while his swords appear as though their edges, notched from striking, were crafted thus.

  3. يَزورُ الأَعادي في سَماءِ عَجاجَةٍ

    أَسِنَّتُهُ في جانِبَيها الكَواكِبُ

    They rose like suns—the scabbards were their East, and the skulls of men became their setting West.

    Diverse disasters gathered into a single grief, yet not content with this, fresh sorrows followed in its wake.

  4. فَتُسفِرُ عَنهُ وَالسُيوفُ كَأَنَّما

    مَضارِبُها مِمّا اِنفَلَلنَ ضَرائِبُ

    One with no kinship mourned the son of our father, driving a wedge between us, though we are his nearest blood.

    He insinuated that we rejoice in his death—may the sharp blades sever his neck if he speaks false!

  5. طَلَعنَ شُموساً وَالغُمودُ مَشارِقُ

    لَهُنَّ وَهاماتُ الرِجالِ مَغارِبُ

    Is it not strange that between the sons of one father, scorpions of slander creep at the behest of a Jew's son?

    Truly, the death of Muhammad stands as proof that against God's will, none can prevail.

  6. مَصائِبُ شَتّى جُمِّعَت في مُصيبَةٍ

    وَلَم يَكفِها حَتّى قَفَتها مَصائِبُ

  7. رَثى اِبنَ أَبينا غَيرُ ذي رَحِمٍ لَهُ

    فَباعَدَنا مِنهُ وَنَحنُ الأَقارِبُ

  8. وَعَرَّضَ أَنّا شامِتونَ بِمَوتِهِ

    وَإِلّا فَزارَت عارِضَيهِ القَواضِبُ

  9. أَلَيسَ عَجيباً أَنَّ بَينَ بَني أَبٍ

    لِنَجلِ يَهودِيٍّ تَدِبُّ العَقارِبُ

  10. أَلا إِنَّما كانَت وَفاةُ مُحَمَّدٍ

    دَليلاً عَلى أَن لَيسَ لِلَّهِ غالِبُ
