The reproaches of reproachers surround the heart of the wanderer,
The censure of critics circles the wanderer's heart, while the love of the beloved dwells in its deepest core.
And the passions of lovers emanate from its darkness.
Blame complains to the scolding women of its own burning heat, and he turns away, as they chide, from his violent grief.
The blamer complains to the blamers of his burning,
And within my soul, O critic, reigns the King for whose sake I have angered all mankind merely to gain his grace.
And avoids when he is blamed for his joys.
If he has taken possession of hearts, it is because he has mastered Time itself, in its earth and its heavens.
By my delight, O my reproacher, the king whom
The sun is numbered among his enviers, Victory among his companions, and the Sword is but one of his names.
I angered all people to please him.
Yet where are those three before three of his traits: his radiance, his lofty pride, and his piercing resolve?
If he has ruled the hearts, he surely
Epochs have passed without bringing forth his likeness, and now that he has come, they fail to produce his peer.
Has ruled the time with its land and sky.
The sun is jealous of him, and victory is
Among his peers, and the sword is among his names.
Where are the three compared to his three traits
Of beauty, pride, and prosperity?
Eras have passed and none has come like him,
And when he came they fell short of equalling him.
