By your generous grace, poverty is banished
By hope of your bounty, poverty is driven away,
And by your enmity, life itself runs out
And in your enmity, life’s span is cut short.
So the glass fell because you drank from it
The glass took pride that you drank from its brim,
And you excused the one whom wine had overcome
While the wine rebuked the one who shunned it.
You remained sober though it intoxicated us
You remained safe from it while it conquered our wits,
As if drunkenness itself had abandoned you
As though intoxication itself stood in awe of you.
No one hopes for an act of generosity
No one is besought for the granting of grace,
Except God, and you, O full moon
Save for the Lord God and you, O Badr.
