For this day after tomorrow's fragrant dawn
For this day, the morrow holds a fragrance sweet,
And a fire against the enemy with loud crackling
And against the foe, a fire that wildly roars;
In which the castles spend the night secure
Under its guard, chaste women sleep secure,
And on its roads the pilgrims travel safely
And pilgrims travel safe along their paths.
So your enemies remain wherever they were
May your enemies remain forever as they were,
O lion terrifying in your rage
Mere prey, O Lion roused to raging wrath!
I knew you though the ranks were in disarray
I knew you when the battle ranks were marshaled,
And without your sword you would not engage
And on naught but your sword you would rely.
The sea's face can be known from afar
The ocean's face is recognized from afar,
If it is rippling, how much more if it enrages?
Even when still—how then when it storms?
In a land where leagues are destroyed
In a land where galloping steeds are spent,
When the steeds fully race in exertion
When every breach is filled with headlong flight,
It tries the soul of Rome's king therein
You seek therein the Roman Monarch's life,
So his wretched subjects ransom him
While his barbarian hordes are slain to ransom him.
Do the Christians threaten us with raids?
Do the Christians threaten us with tides of war,
While we are its stars and it is the mansions
When we are the stars, and they the zodiac signs?
Among us is the sword whose scabbard is true
Among us is the Sword whose strike rings true,
If it meets in battle, its sharpness rages
When he meets the foe, persistent in his raid.
We invoke blessings upon it against the chiefs' evil
We shield him with charms against the envious eye,
And many pray loudly for it
As the clamor of prayers for him grows loud.
We approved while the bloodshedder disapproved
We are content, though the Domesticus is not,
Of what the ships and commander decided
With the judgment passed by sharp blades and spears.
If he advances, Samanduo we have visited
If he advances, then we have visited Samandu;
And if he holds back, his fate is the Gulf
And if he recoils, our rendezvous is the Gulf.
