1. I know full well—and the discerning are well aware—

    that life, however eagerly you cling to it, is deception.

  2. And I have seen everyone soothe himself

    with some solace, yet pass into extinction.

  3. O neighbor of al-Dimas, captive in a hollow

    whose radiance and light come from his face.

  4. Before your burial in the earth, I had never thought

    that stars could sink into the dust.

  5. Before you lay on your bier, I had never expected to see

    Mount Radwa moving upon men's hands.

  6. They went out with him, and every weeper behind him suffered

    Moses' swoons on the day the Mount was shattered.

  7. And the sun, in the heart of the sky, was sick,

    and the earth was trembling, nearly heaving.

  8. And around him rustled the wings of angels,

    and the eyes of Latakia's people were turned toward him,

  9. until they reached a grave, as though his tomb

    were dug into the heart of every believer in one God,

  10. bringing one provisioned from his possessions with a shroud for decay,

    slumbering, with camphor as the kohl of his eye.

  11. Within it lie eloquence, generosity, and piety,

    and all valor, and wisdom, and goodness.

  12. Praise pledged to restore his life

    when he was folded away; thus he seems raised again.

  13. And his memory is like Jesus, son of Mary,

    and his buried body is like Lazarus.
