1. حكم اخص بها منادمة الفكر

    وأخصها بذوي الغرام من البشر

    Wisdom I impart, to the company of thought confided

    And confide to lovers among mankind

  2. حكم تخرّ لها المسامع سجداً

    فتثيبها الدرّ الفريد المبتكر

    Wisdom to which ears bow down prostrate

    Exquisite, unique pearls it offers in return

  3. شهدت بدائعها بأن مديرها

    خدم الغرام وقام فيه على خطر

    I bear witness to its wonders, that its director

    Served passion and endangered himself for its sake

  4. ودعا لدين الحب في فتراته

    والحب أحسن ما يسام وما يسر

    And summoned the religion of love in its isolation

    And love is the best that can be named and facilitated

  5. حسنت قوانين الأمور وإنما

    قانونه يسبي العقول بلا وتر

    It refined the laws of affairs, although

    Its law takes reason captive, devoid of excuse

  6. فترى بدستور الغرام أسيرنا

    لا يفتدى وقتيلنا دمه هدر

    You see, by passion's constitution, our prisoner

    Is not to be ransomed, and our murdered, his blood wasted

  7. دانت لطاعته الجوارح واختفى

    ويجل عن حد ووقت ينتظر

    The limbs are obedient to it, and it is concealed

    Sublime, beyond limit or appointed time to expect

  8. وبعكس طبع المرء ينفذ أمره

    وجرى القضاء بأن يطاع إذا أمر

    Contrary to person's nature, its command enforced

    And the decree enforced that it be obeyed when ordered

  9. يستخرج الدر الفريد من النهى

    ويهذِّب الأخلاق في زمن الصغر

    It extracts exquisite pearls from prohibition

    And refines morals in the days of youth

  10. ويعطِّر الأرواح في نفحاته

    ويخلد الذكر الجميل المفتخر

    Its breaths perfume the souls

    And eternalizes proud, glorious memory

  11. واحذر لحاظ الغيد إن لم تستطع

    صبراً وكن من سودهن على حذر

    Beware the glances of the gazelle, if you can't

    Endure, and be of their intensity wary

  12. واسلم بنفسك إنني لك ناصح

    وسل الخبير بها ودع خطط الخطر

    Surrender yourself, for I advise you well

    And ask the expert of it, and dangerous schemes forswear

  13. ودع النفوس تميس في روض المنى

    طمعاً ولا تجنِ الثمار من الشجر

    Let souls revel in the meadows of delight

    Greedily, and do not pluck fruit from the trees

  14. فالحب أصدقه لدى العشاق ما

    عزَّت مطالبه وعز المصطبر

    For love, its requests are truest for lovers

    The more stubborn, the more valued by the steadfast

  15. واحفظ حديث الحسن عمن قد رأى

    من آيه الكبرى وما زاغ البصر

    And keep the account of the Beauty from one who has seen

    The great sign, whose sight did not waver

  16. والحسن لا تسع العبارة وصفه

    وتطاول الشعراء فيه من القصر

    And Beauty, prose can't capture its description

    As poets fall short in describing it

  17. وانظر إلى شعر المليح ظفيرة

    ظفرت بتقبيل المواطىء والأثر

    Look at the hair of the smooth-cheeked beloved

    She won my kisses, the imprints victorious

  18. وكأنها ألف بليت بجرها

    ما كنت أعهد قبلها ألفاً تجر

    As if she gathered what had scattered before her

    Not what I was used to gathering and scattering

  19. وانظر لطرّته وغرّته معاً

    وأدر لحاظك في الصباح وفي السحر

    Consider her dimple and her pride together

    And glance shyly, in dawn and at night

  20. ترَ آيتين ومن عجائب ما ترى

    قمر الجمال يلوح من فلك الغرر

    You see two wonders, miracles among what you see

    The moon of beauty gleaming in a starry orbit

  21. وانظر لقوسي حاجبيه وقد رمى

    بهما فؤاد المستهام بلا وتر

    Look at the bows of her eyebrows, which shot

    My heart with them, no excuse left

  22. قرنا على قتلي رؤوسهما وما

    أبصرت بينهما طريقاً للمفر

    Bent on killing me, their heads the arrows

    I saw between them no path to escape

  23. وانظر إلى سود اللحاظ كأنها

    بيض مجردة لسفك دم البشر

    Look at her black eyelashes, as though

    Bared swords to shed human blood

  24. سكرى تميس من النعاس وكلما

    شهرت أسنّتها يميل بها السكر

    Her intoxication wanders from drowsiness, and whenever

    Her tongue loosens, the drunkenness in her wanders

  25. وانظر إلى ثغر العقيق وقف لدى

    شفة الجمان وحيّ بارقة الدرر

    Consider her carnelian lips having stopped at

    The mouth of the beautiful cups, sparkling pearls

  26. وانشق أريج المسك من نفحاته

    ورد اللمى وسل التزوُّد بالنظر

    The scent of musk splitting from her breaths

    Rousing vigour and determination to gain insight

  27. وانظر إلى جيد الأَغن كأنه

    كأس من البلور قم بما أسر

    Consider her ivory neck, as though

    A drinking glass, rising with the noblest

  28. وارقب طلوع الفجر من أزراره

    واعذر لطلعته المؤذن في السحر

    And watch the dawn rising on her breast

    Excuse the Porter its call at dawn

  29. وانظر لمختصر الخصور بدقّة

    وسل الكثيب يريك شرح المختصر

    Consider the knit, delicate curve

    And ask the dune to explain the summary to you

  30. تر إنما بي من نحول في الهوى

    فعل وفاعله الضمير المستتر

    You see but the symptoms of emaciation in passion

    Deed and its doer, the hidden pronoun
