1. بأبي من زارني ملتثماً

    وجلاً من رقباء الحرس

    By my father, he who visited me secretly

    And came openly protected by guards

  2. فهو كالبدر بدا مبتسماً

    يتوارى تحت ذيل الغلس

    He appeared like a full moon, smiling

    Concealing himself under his thick forelock

  3. جال ماء الحسن في وجنته

    بين آس وبهار وشقيق

    The water of beauty flowed on his cheeks

    Among myrtle, basil, and wallflower

  4. وبدور التم من غرته

    تتجلى في صباح من بريق

    And the light of his perfect face shone forth

    In the radiant morning light

  5. وشموس الراح من ريقته

    في كؤوس من جمان وعقيق

    And the suns of pleasure from his saliva

    In cups of glass and carnelian

  6. فترى الناس سكارى كلما

    أسفرت فوق شقيق اللعس

    So you see people drunk whenever

    He smiles over wallflower juice

  7. يا حمى الله حمى ذاك اللمى

    من شفاه الناظر المختلس

    O may God protect that charming one

    From the kisses of the ogling gazer

  8. تعشق الألفاظ معناه فلا

    تنكروا في وصفه اللفظ الرقيق

    Words love his meaning so do not

    Deny gentle words in describing him

  9. يترك اللب لماه ثملاً

    كلما مر بمعناه العتيق

    He leaves the mind intoxicated whenever

    His ancient meaning passes by

  10. ترشف الأسماع منه غزلاً

    كمنت في جسمه روح الرحيق

    Ears sip his words like the spirit

    That dwelt in his perfect body

  11. هل رأيتم أو سمعتم كلما

    يثمر الدر بروض المجلس

    Have you ever seen or heard whenever

    Pearls bear fruit in the meadow of the sitting place

  12. فلماه قوت روح الندما

    وجناه منية المغترس

    For his saliva is the strength of the soul

    And his qualities ripen what is planted

  13. مستعيراً خصره من جسدي

    غصن بان يزدري بالخيزران

    Borrowing his waist from my body

    A branch disdained the lote-trees

  14. كلما يفتر أوهى جَلَدي

    بأقاح من ثناياه الحسان

    Whenever his smooth skin weakened

    With berries from his beautiful folds

  15. هل رأيتم عسكراً من بَرَد

    في ثغور من عقيق وجمان

    Have you seen an army of hailstones

    In the land of carnelian and glass

  16. كلما يبدو لنا مبتسما

    يغلب الوجد على المحترس

    Whenever it appears smiling to us

    Passion overcomes the guarded one

  17. فاصطباري قد مضى منهزماً

    وسلوِّي معرض في عبس

    So my patience is defeated

    And my solace indifferent and frowning

  18. تغرس الآمال في روض المنى

    كل حين شجراً لن يثمرا

    Hope plants in the garden of wishes

    Every time trees that will never bear fruit

  19. طالما عللت لحظي بجنى

    وجنتيه فاجتنيت السهرا

    Long have I blamed my gaze for gathering

    Its fruits, so I stayed up at night

  20. رقّ في معناه شعري فانثنى

    خجلاً قول رئيس الشعرا

    Subtle is his poetry's meaning that it bent

    Ashamed before the master poet's words

  21. هل درى ظبي الحِمى أن قد حمى

    قلب صب حله عن مكنس

    Does the doe of the protected land know that it has protected

    A heart whose measurement has narrowed

  22. فهو في حرّ وخفقٍ مثلما

    لعبت ريح الصبا بالقبس

    So it is hot and throbbing just as

    The morning breeze played with the firebrand

  23. بأبي من زارني مختلساً

    فرصة من بعد عجز الحيل

    By my father, he who visited me furtively

    An opportunity after failing in my tricks

  24. ليت شعري مذ تجلى هل كسا

    بدمي خدّيه أم بالخجل

    If only my poetry, since he appeared, dressed

    His cheeks with my blood or with shyness

  25. يا رعى الله غزالاً ما غزا

    مهجة إلا سباها ونفر

    O may God protect a gazelle who never ransacked

    A pasture without capturing and scaring it

  26. إن تثنّى أو رنا أو برزا

    ترَ غصناً وظبياً وقمر

    Whether it glanced sidelong or turned gently or stepped forward

    You see a branch, a doe, and the moon

  27. فاق في الحسن فلما غمزا

    قيل بدر التم في ليل الشعر

    He surpassed in beauty so when he winked

    It was said, "the full moon in the night of poetry"

  28. ها أنا من حبه مت أسى

    وهو عن إعراضه لم يحل

    While he is indifferent to rejecting me

    If only he would delight my hearing with hope

  29. ليته متَّع سمعي بعسى

    أن تراني يا حليف العلل

    That you would see me, O intimate of my illness

    Apple trees assaulted me from the cheek of the beautiful one

  30. أجتني التفاح من خدّ المليح

    إن تبدّى بأكف الحدق

    If he showed it in the ponds of the cheeks

    And I see in that radiant face

  31. وأرى من ذلك الوجه الصبيح

    فلقاً ينسخ نور الفلق

    A crescent that copies the light of dawn

    My love, if only I had a wounded heart

  32. آل ودّي أن لي قلباً جريح

    هائماً في حبكم لم يفق

    Infatuated with your love, never awoken

    So have mercy by union on youth despairing

  33. فارحموا بالوصل صباً يئسا

    من سوى السقم وقرب الأجل

    Of anything but sickness and nearing death

    For he kept vigil so long, forgetting

  34. فهو ساه ساهر ما أنسا

    بأنيس بعدكم يا أملي

    After you, O my hopes, any companion

    My patience in the love of gazelles is lost

  35. ضاع صبري في هوى الغزلان ضاع

    وهو لم يسعفوا قلبي بشيّ

    And they did not relieve my heart at all

    They left me wandering on the day of farewell

  36. تركوني هائماً يوم الوداع

    وكووا قلبي بنار الهجر كي

    And seared my heart with the fire of estrangement

    My status through love for them spread

  37. شاع شأني فيهم بالحب شاع

    وأبوا أن يعطفوا يوماً عليّ

    And they refused to show me any kindness

    So my sleep is stolen from my eyelids

  38. فمنامي من جفوني خلسا

    وغرامي زائد لم يزل

    And my passion ever increasing

    Alas, the memory of days gone sour

  39. آه من ذكر زمان عبسا

    وتولى بعد صفو مقتل

    And friendship turned after sweetness to slaying

    O kinsmen of affection, my heart has melted

  40. يا أهيل الودّ قد ذاب الفؤاد

    من لظى الهجران والدمع رقا

    From the severity of estrangement and soft tears

    Do you think the days of affection will return

  41. هل ترى ترجع أيام الوداد

    ونعود مثل ما قد سبقا

    And we will go back to what came before

    And my eyes will see plainly whoever wishes

  42. ويرى طرفي عياناً من أراد

    وأراني طيبه منتشقا

    And I will see goodness inhaling from him

    And see saliva purer than pearls from him

  43. وترى منه إقاحاً حرسا

    ذلك الريق الشهي السلسلي

    The best kohl with the juice of kohl

    If only he would remain for my sleepy eyes

  44. وأرى طرفاً سقيماً نعسا

    فاخر الكحل بغنج الكحل

    So I could dream of his phantom

    For my yearning has harmed the body

  45. ليته أبقى لعيني الوسنا

    علني أحظى بطيف الحلم

    And my weeping mixed tears with blood

    O for a youth who melted with passion and sorrow

  46. فاشتياقي قد أضرّ البدنا

    وبكائي شاب دمعي بدمي

    And I walk in shackles of pain

    Some people said, when he swore off

  47. يا لصب ذاب وجداً وضنا

    وأسير في قيود الألم

    The burning passion and overflowing sickness

    Avoid him, for you have wasted away in sorrow

  48. قال بعض الناس لما أنسَ

    حرق الشوق وفرط العلل

    I said, “Leave me be, I'm no ascetic”

  49. اعتزله فلقد ذبت أسى

    قلت دعني لست بالمعتزلي
