أغرَّك صبري وفرط ودادي

فعرَّضتني للأسى والسهاد

Your patience misled me, and my excessive love,

Exposing me to sorrow and sleeplessness.

وقد نفد اليوم صبري وإني

بقيت من الصبر من غير زاد

Today my patience is exhausted, and I have

No patience left whatsoever.

وأسكرني في الهوى ملء عيني

فكيف أقوم بملء فؤادي

My eyes intoxicated me with love,

So how can my heart be sober?

وباح لسان الأسى بغرامي

وشاعت أحاديثه في البلاد

The tongue of sorrow proclaimed my passion,

And its tales spread in the lands.

وما بمرادي رضيت افتضاحي

ولكن رضيت بغير مرادي

I did not accept having my love exposed,

But accepted what I did not want.

إلام تطيل جفاك وأشقى

بعين الرقيب وعذل الأعادي

Why do you prolong your estrangement, and cause misery

In the eyes of the watcher and the blamer?

فلو زار طيفك باب الجفون

لصادف فيه رقيب السهاد

If your ghost visited my eyelids,

It would meet there the watcher of sleeplessness.
