1. شَكَرتُكَ لِلنُعمى فَلَمّا رَمَيتَني

    بِصَدُّكَ تَأديباً شكَرتُكَ في الهَجرِ

    I thanked You for Your bounty, but when

    You spurned me to discipline me, I thanked You in estrangement,

  2. فَعِندِيَ لِلتَأديبِ شُكرٌ وَلِلنَدى

    وَإِن شِئتَ كانَ العَفوُ أَدنى إِلى الشُكرِ

    So for me there is thanks for discipline

    And for intimacy. And if You wish, pardon is nearer to thanks

  3. إِذا ما اِلتَقاكَ المُستَليمُ بِعُذرِهِ

    فَعَفوُكَ خَيرٌ مِن مَلامٍ عَلى عُذرِ

    When the apologetic meets You with his excuse,

    Your pardon is better than blame upon excuse.
