1. أعَلِمتَ حين تجاور الحيّانِ

    أنّ القلوبَ مواقدُ النّيرانِ

    You knew when the loves drew near,

    That hearts are fires of passion lit;

  2. وعرفتَ أنّ صدورَنا قد أصبحت

    في القوم وَهيَ مرابضُ الغِزلان

    And you learned that now our breasts

    Are dove-cotes where young birds will flit;

  3. وعيونَنا عِوَضَ العيون أمدَّها

    ما غادروا فيها من الغُدرانِ

    While eyes for eyes made poor amends,

    From those that pierced our souls and smit.

  4. ما الوَخذُ هزَّ قِبابَهم بل هزَّها

    قلبي لما فيه من الخَفقانِ

    Not wine made roof and rafter reel,

    But my heart's tumult flung me flat,

  5. وتراهُ يكَرهُ أن يرى إظعانَهم

    وكأنّما أصبحتُ في الأظعانِ

    Though like a reveller I feel,

    Who wakes and knows not where he's at.

  6. وبمُهجتى قمرٌ إذا ما لاح للسَّ

    ارِى تضاءَلَ دونه القَمرانش

    My forehead hides a moon, whose rays,

    Outshining sun and moon, would quit

  7. قد بانَ للعُشَّاقِ أنَّ قَوامَهُ

    سرقَت شمائِلَهُ غصونُ البانِ

    The sky, and choosing there to blaze,

    Would shame the sun that once shone bright.

  8. وأراك غُصناً فى النّعيم تميلُ إذ

    غُصنُ الأراك يميدُ فى نَعمانِ

    His charms alone gave him the right

    To raid the branches of the ban.

  9. للرُّمح نَصلٌ واحدٌ ولقَدِّهِ

    من ناظريه إذا إذا رَنَا نَصلانِ

    I see you as a bough made slight

    By bounty, while the boughs of ban

  10. والسيفُ ليس له سوى جَفنٍ وقد

    اضحى لصارم طَرفِه جَفنانِ

    Stand stiff in benefaction's demesne.

    One spearpoint serves where spearheads ran;

  11. والسَّهمُ تكفى القوس فيه وقد غدَا

    من حاجبَيهِ للحظهِ قوسانِ

    His eyes for double swords at need

    Make eyelids edge take swordblade's span.

  12. ولَرُبَّ ليلٍ خِلتُ خاطفَ بَرقِهِ

    ناراً تَلَفَّعَ للدُّجَى بدُخان

    The bow's content with single string,

    His drawn brow serving for its bow,

  13. كالمائل الوسنانِ من طجُول السُّرَى

    جَوزاؤُهُ والرَّاقصِ السّكرانِ

    The arrow's point enough can sting,

    His glances for its arrows go.

  14. ما بانَ فيه من ثُرَيَّاهُ سوى

    إعجامِها والدَّالُ في الدَّبرانِ

    And nights whose lightning mocked the dark

    I spent confounded, lost in woe,

  15. وترى المجّرة في النجوم كأنها

    تَسقِى الرّياضَ بجدولٍ ملآنِ

    Like drunkard lurching, like one stark,

    Bewildered, lorn, and fain to know

  16. لو لم يكن نهراً لَمَا عامَت به

    أبداً نجومُ الحوتِ والسّرطانِ

    How, 'mid the stars, the swirling seas

    In Serpent and the Whale can flow;

  17. نادَمتُ فيه الفرقدين كأنني

    دون الورى وجَذيمةً أخَوانِ

    I made the Pleiades heart-ease,

    As though we were not separate,

  18. وترفَّعَت همَمي فما أرضَى سوى

    شُهبِ الدُّجى عِوضاً من الخِلاَّنِ

    And dreams exalted me to heights

    Far from the world and time's estate.

  19. وَأنِفتُ حين فُجعتُ بالأحباب أن

    ألهُو عن الإخوان بالخَوَّانِ

    I scorned, when friends proved false, to sate

    My pain in comrades of a day.

  20. واعتضتُ من جود الوزير مواهباً

    أسلَت عن الأوطار والأوطان

    I was too proud to live on largesse

    And doles from ministry that rules.

  21. يا كاسِرَ الأصنامِ قُم فانهض بنا

    حتى تصيرَ مُكَسِّرَ الصُّلبانِ

    Idol-smasher, rise! Our night is o'er;

    Come lead us, till the Cross lies prone!

  22. فالشَّامُ مُلكُكَ قد ورثتَ تُراثَهُ

    عن قومِك الماضين من غَسَّانِ

    Syria is thine by right of yore;

    Thy line ruled it, since Jassan's reign.

  23. فإذا شككتَ أنّها أوطانُهم

    قِدماً فسَل عن حارث الجَولانِ

    Doubt not this land was ever theirs!

    Question old Hareth of Golan!

  24. أو رُمتَ أن تتلو محاسِنَ ذكرِهم

    فاسند روايتها إِلى حسَّانِ

    Or read their virtues' record fair

    In Hassan's ode and Harith's strain.

  25. ما زُلزلت أرضُ العِدا بل ذاك ما

    بقلوب أهليها من الخفقان

    Earth quaked not here: within their breasts

    Was tumult when thy drum was blown.

  26. وأقولُ إنّ حصونَهم سجدت لِما

    أُوتيتَ من مُلكٍ ومن سلطانِ

    Their mountain fastnesses confessed

    Thy rule, thy sultan's Might alone,

  27. والنّاسُ أجدَرُ بالسّجودِ إذا غدا

    لعُلاكَ يسجدُ شامخُ البُنيانِ

    And men should rather prostrate fall,

    When lofty buildings are o'erthrown.

  28. ولقد بعثتَ إِلى الفرنج كتائباً

    كالاُسدِ حين تصولُ فى خفَّانِ

    Thou sentest troops, like lions all,

    To rend the Franks with aid unguessed--

  29. لبسوا الدروع ولم نَخَل مِن قَبلهم

    أنّ البحارَ تحلُّ فى غُدرانِ

    Who donned their mail, till men no more

    Could dream the seas might grant them rest--

  30. وتيمّموا أرضَ العدوِّ بقفرةٍ

    جرداءَ خاليةٍ من السُّكانِ

    And rode the waste, devoid of folk,

    For twenty days without a tent,

  31. عشرين يوماً فى المُغَار وليلةً

    يَسرَون تحت كواكب الخُرصانِ

    And twenty nights 'neath Capricorn

    They fared, where sand's as water blent.

  32. حتى إذا قطعوا الجِفارَ بجحفلٍ

    هو فى العديد ورملُهُ سِيَّانِ

    Lured by the barrens, there thy bands

    Brought low the lofty battlement.

  33. أغريتهم بحمى العِدَا فجعلتَهُ

    بِسُطَاكَ بعد العزِّ دار هوانِ

    Thou hurriedst them, when they withstood,

    To drink destruction's surgent flood

  34. عجّلت في تلِّ العُجولِ قِراهُمُ

    وهُمُ لك الضّيفان بالذِّيفانِ

    Whenas their chiefs thou hadst removed

    With blades that bit and blades that hewed.

  35. لمّا أبَوا ما في الجِفان قَرَبتَهُمُ

    بصوارمٍ سُلَّت من الأجفانِ

    The tents upon the beach o'erthrown

    Were washed alike in wave and blood.

  36. وثَلَلتَ في يوم العريش عُروشَهُمُ

    بشَبَا ضرابٍ صادقٍ وطعانِ

    At their decease thy sword drank full,

    And blood and water were as one.

  37. ألجأتهُم للبحر لمَّا أن جَرَى

    مِنه ومن دمهم معاً بَحرانِ

    Then men praised Heaven that foemen fell

    To dye thy mail a crimson tone.

  38. مُدِحَ الورى بالبأسِ إذ خَضَبُوا الظُّبَا

    في يوم حربهمُ من الأقرانِ

    Each teeming main runs red for thee,

    With blood of ships thou put'st to flight.

  39. ولأنتَ تخضبُ كلَّ بحرٍ زاخرٍ

    ممَّن تحاربُ بالنَّجِيعِ القانى

    Till thou behold'st their greenest sea

    Turn to shygrel and rose bedight.

  40. حتى ترى دمَهم وخُضرَةَ مائِهِ

    كشقائِقٍ نُثِرَت على الرَّيحانِ

    The Greek fleet, when it sailed to war,

    Brought what no other fleet e'er brought

  41. وكأنّ بحرَ الرُّوم خُلِّقَ وجهُهُ

    وطَفَت عليه منابتُ المَرجانِ

    I loved to watch its hawks that wore

    Dove's feathers: then with osprey fraught

  42. ولقد أتَى الأسطولُ حين غَزا بما

    لم يأتِ في حينٍ من الأحيانِ

    Its prowling kites tore flesh in shreds.

    Once cast for anchor stones, ropes taut,

  43. أحبِب إلىَّ بها شوانِيَ أصبحت

    من فتكها ولها العُداةُ شوانى

    With captives chained they sailed instead,

    Hands bound behind them as they fought.

  44. شُبِّهنَ بالغِربانِ في ألوانها

    وفَعلنَ فِعلَ كواسرِ العِقبان

    Hot for the fray against the foe,

    Thy April fortune smiled elate,

  45. أَوقرتَها عُددَ القتالِ فقد غَدت

    فيها القَنَا عِوضاً من الأشطان

    When Shaban's closing days shall show

    Division's star malignly great.

  46. فأتتكَ مُوقرَةً بِسَبيٍ بينه

    أسرَاهُمُ مغلولةَ الأذقانِ

    Thine, when the Martyr passed away,

    His office was to instal the state--

  47. حربٌ عَوانٌ حكَّمَتكَ من العدا

    فى كلِّ بكرٍ عندهم وعَوَانِ

    Not cease to further, night and day,

    What thought impossible of fate.

  48. وأعَدتَ رُسلَ ابن القسيم إليه فى

    شعبانَ كى يتلاءَمَ الشَّعبانِ

    He slew the Prince, who led astray,

    And though he strove to dominate,

  49. والفألُ يشهدُ باسمه أنسوف يغ

    دُو الشامُ وهوَ عليكما قِسمانِ

    I saw the wolds turn Judas grey

    With vicar's blood in reprobate.

  50. وأراك من بعد الشَّهيد أباً له

    وجعلَته من أقربِ الإِخوانِ

    Men wondered, when his head was shown,

    To see his lashes raying blue

  51. وهو الذى ما زال يفعَلُ فى العِدَا

    ما لم يكن لِيُعَدَّ فى الإِمكان

    As though above the spearhead strewn

    Another spearpoint met the view!

  52. قَتلَ البِرنسَ ومَن عساهُ أعانَه

    لمَّا عَتَا فى البغى والعدوان

    Hail to the King! Should he prevail,

    His throne by might shall stand secure.

  53. وأرى البريَّةَ حين عادَ برأسه

    مُرَّ الجَنَى يبدو على المُرَّان

    His spears have deafened with their tale

    Earth's sovrans, terror struck and dour.

  54. وتعجّبُوا من زُرقََةٍ فى طرفهِ

    وكأنّ فوقَ الرّمحِ نَصلاً ثانى

    Though floods may raze the highland towers,

    His bounty builds them new and sure.

  55. فَليَهنِهِ أن فاز منك بسيِّدٍ

    أوفى برتبته على كيوانِ

    The brilliant fire of his mind flowers

    In verse whose sweetness shall endure,

  56. قد صاغَ من أرماحِهِ لمَسَامع ال

    أملاك أقراطاً من الخُرِصَانِ

    Like pearls his phrases charm the ear:

    Had they assumed material powers,

  57. والخيلُ تعلمُ فى الكريهة أنّهُ

    قد حَطَّ هيكلَها على الفرسانِ

    They had adorned no brow severe

    But wreaths and coronals and flowers.

  58. عجباً لجُودِ يديه إذ يبنى العُلا

    والسيلُ يهدِمُ ثابتَ الأركانِ

    You grace with gifts that far outvie

    Time's treasuries and fortune's dower--

  59. وَلَنارُ فِطنتِهِ تُرِيكَ لشعره

    عَذباً يُرَوِّى غُلَّةَ الظَّمآن

    No caravan across the sky

    Is burdened with such freight of ore--

  60. وعُقودَ دُرٍّ لو تجسَّمَ لفظُها

    ما رُصِّعَت إِلاَّ على التِّيجان

    O thou whose bounties aye increase,

    Though lavished inexhaustible!

  61. وتنزّهت عن أن تُرَى أفرادُهَا

    لمواضعِ الأقراطِ والآذان

    The desert necks are bowed with these,

    And weigh them down intolerable,

  62. من كلِّ رائِقةٍ الجمالِ زهَت بها

    بين القصائِد عِزَّةُ السلطان

    Till mankind are as equals made,

    The near and far on equal floor.

  63. سيَّارةٌ في الأرض لا يَعتاقُها

    فى سيرها قَيدٌ من الأوزان

    Your pardons those in need have weighed,

    And those who sinful paths explore.

  64. يا مُنعِماً ما للثناء ولو غلا

    يوماً بما تُولى يداهُ يَدَان

  65. قَلَّدتَ أعناقَ البريَّةَِ كُلَّها

    مِنَناً تحمَّلَ ثِقلَهَا الثَّقَلانِ

  66. حتى تساوَى الناسُ فيك وأصبح ال

    قاصى بمنزلة القريبِ الدَّانى

  67. ورحمتَ أهلَ العجزِ منهم مثلما

    أصبحتَ تَغفِرُ للمسىءِ الجانِى
