أَخجَلتُه بِعِتابي
عَلى بعادي وصَدّي
I rebuked him for keeping
His distance and aloofness from me.
فَقالَ لي لا تُعاتِبْ
أَلَستَ تُبصِرُ قَدّي
He said, “Do not reproach me -
Can you not see my stature?
وَقَد تَنَدّى حَياءً
بطَلِّه وردُ خدّي
Does not my shyness proclaim itself
In my cheek's roseate glow?
وَقالَ مِنهُ تَطيَّبْ
فَإِنّهُ ماءُ وَردي
Be perfumed by it," he said;
"It is the water of my rose garden."
