في ذا الزَّمانِ اِعتَرى أَقرانَنا عِلل
مِن كلِّ داءٍ دَفينٍ صاحِ مُكتَمِنِ
In this age, maladies have beset our peers—
every deep-seated, hidden disease, my friend.
داوَيتَهم بِنِفاقٍ فَهوَ يَنفَعُهم
وَذا الدّواء اِقتَضَتهُ علَّةُ الزَّمنِ
I treated them with hypocrisy, for it does them good;
this remedy was demanded by the malady of the age.
