1. إِنّ الكَريمَ إِذا مَدحتَ خِصالَهُ

    فَمِنَ الحَياءِ يودّ أَنْ لم يمدحِ

    When you praise the noble one's virtues

    Out of modesty he wishes you hadn't praised him

  2. أَمّا اللّئيمُ إِذا ذَممتَ خِصالَهُ

    خَلَعَ الحَياءَ وَلَم يَكُن بِالمُستَحي

    But when you criticize the ignoble one's faults

    He casts off all shame, no longer bashful
