وَأَعلمُ علمَ الشّعرِ في حُسْن رَونقٍ
وَلَكِنْ لَهُ مِن حَقِّه كُنتُ أَمنَعُ
And I know the art of poetry in its fine splendor,
Yet I withheld from it its due.
عَلِمتُ وَلَم أَعمَل بِه فَلأَنّني
إِذا فاتَني المَعنى فَبِالاسمِ أَقنعُ
I learned but did not put it into practice, for
When the meaning eludes me, I am content with the name.
