وَمَكسورة الأَجفانِ وَطفي تَكَحّلت
بِكُحلٍ غَدا كَالسّحرِ تَحويهِ بابلُ
And a languid-lidded, thick-lashed woman has lined her eyes
With kohl that became like the magic Babylon holds.
وَما كُحلُها مِن زينَةٍ غيرَ أَنّهُ
لِسم نِبالِ الجَفنِ حينَ تناضلُ
And her kohl is not for adornment; rather, it is
For poisoning the eyelid’s arrows when she duels.
أَرادَت بِسمّ النّبلِ قَتلَ مُحِبّها
إِذِ النبل مَسموماً وَلا شَكّ قاتِلُ
She intended to kill her lover with the arrows’ poison,
For poisoned arrows are, without doubt, deadly.
