1. Like the emir is one who is content

    with what God has decreed,

  2. and has surrendered his affairs to Him

    freely, entrusting them to Him.

  3. And judgment belongs to God, the Great,

over what comes and what has passed.

  4. He has enforced His decree in creation,

in keeping with His will and its dictates.

  5. He has annihilated and brought into being whomever He wills,

and healed the sick and brought on sickness.

  6. Glory be to Him—what a ruler,

    just, wise, and well-pleasing!

  7. All belong to Him,

those He loves and those He hates,

  8. whether brown-skinned or red-skinned,

    or black-skinned or white-skinned.

  9. O you, emir, brother of lofty glory,

    whose command carries decisive force!

  10. O bearer of honor, who

unsheathed the keen blades of glory!

  11. O bearer of praiseworthy renown,

    which no ending overtakes!

  12. If indeed you have suffered the loss of a star

    that vanished when he died,

  13. that sprang from the essence of glory

and shone at the pinnacle of eminence,

  14. then God, my Lord, chose him;

so be patient and submit to the decree.

  15. And surely you are the finest of those who endure,

    who meet calamities with acceptance.

  16. And may God make your reward abundant,

and compensate you for his loss.

  17. And may God preserve you for us

    as long as lightning flashes.
