1. You gave me lemons, through which I was healed,

    And an ailment buried in the lovesick lover’s heart vanished.

  2. Each lemon I fancied to be a sphere

    Of pure gold, whose worth no appraisal could reckon,

  3. Or a purse of pure gold bound up in gold,

    Or the horizon’s full moon, adorned with light.

  4. Lemons bestowed upon you are the most splendid gift;

    Their worth is jealously guarded by seas of generosity.

  5. And I set forth a proverb concerning that:

    The gift of the benefactor, the lavish giver, is lemons.

  6. And indeed, my gratitude for it is gratitude to its giver,

    And thanking its giver is a duty and a practice commended by tradition.

  7. May you ever remain a sea of generosity, bestowing its jewels

    Out of bounty—and pearls are stored nowhere but within it.
