1. O bird of gladness, where humankind is jubilant,

    For you, good fortunes are boughs in the garden of companionship.

  2. Sing proudly among the branches, taking your morning draught;

    Souls and bodies come alive through your song.

  3. And coo upon the highest eminence in our Jilliq,

    For Jilliq’s eye is drowsy with delight.

  4. And sing aloud in Jilliq: glad tidings to you, its citadel!

    For within you Ibrahim is sovereign.

  5. The most glorious, the majestic—his star is the star of glory;

    High honors are his zodiacal mansions, resplendent in him.

  6. The lion, the noble chief, the one among us for whom witness was borne

    To his courage by heroes and horsemen.

  7. A lion whom terrors do not unsettle,

    And he is a man watchful amid the vicissitudes of time.

  8. He strove earnestly for exalted rank, as a merchant;

    And it became his profit, while loss shunned him.

  9. He races upon a radiant sea of kindness; for him,

    There is a field of cheerfulness and welcome.

  10. I congratulate him on the honor he has attained;

    For him, pillars have been raised upon the heights.

  11. From the substance of glory its supports have risen;

    Their structure is built of might, in closely fitted courses.

  12. And he attained a rank in Jilliq of great eminence,

    And in him its prestige sprang from his own stature.

  13. And he appeared as an emir, settling in its citadel;

    Thus a pupil settled in its wide, dark eye.

  14. And when he settled there, good fortune settled there too;

    And everything has its time and season.

  15. Had he settled there in the age of the Persians who passed away,

    The Persians would not be Persians, nor the vaulted hall a vaulted hall.

  16. And he is of al-Jazzar’s own soul, for whom witness was borne

    By Adnan and Qahtan to his championing of the faith.

  17. May he ever ascend to a station in the heights,

    Beneath which lie the sun in this world and Saturn,

  18. As long as the bird of good fortune sings in the garden of joy,

    And as long as lutes sing out for joy.
