شَمسُ الضّحى لَمّا تَعذّر عادَة
مِنها النّزولُ لِأَجلِ قبلةِ رِجلِهِ
The midmorning sun, when it proved impossible in the ordinary course
For her to descend to kiss his foot,
بَسَطَت لَهُ فَوقَ التّرابِ شُعاعها
لِيَدوسَه عَن خَدّها في نَعلِهِ
Spread her radiance for him over the dust,
So he might tread on it in his sandal, in place of her cheek.
