1. Sulayma stirred turmoil in the love-stricken one,

    Since you appeared in the love-stricken one's mind.

  2. You drove away a lover, grief-stricken with passion.

    And love, with union, is deadly to the love-stricken.

  3. I invoked God's name over love when I loved you, lovesick.

    And passion, for the lovesick, is a matter of consequence in love.

  4. O daughter of the desert oryx, you captured a sorrowful man.

    In a deep-black eye is a gazelle, to bewitch your lovesick lover.

  5. In your face is a full moon, and on your brow a crescent.

    O sun of beauty, whose robe is loveliness.

  6. In your cheek are roses, and at your temples myrtle.

    In the mouth are daisies, watered by the sweetest red wine.

  7. And the cheek is a garden, whose water is beauty.

    Amid the roses of modesty it appeared, coursing, already flowing.

  8. And the glance is a sharp sword, and in the eyelids are arrows.

    And the figure is a spear, swaying indeed, supple and quivering.

  9. In your mouth are pearls, and on the lips carnelian.

    And the saliva is lawful choice wine, and the sweetest limpid water.

  10. And the neck is a radiant pillar of pure gold.

    And the figure is a bough, whether upright or bending.

  11. Have pity on one tormented by longing, wasting away

    From separation, and do not heed the reproachers' words.

  12. How lovely was the night when you joined your lovesick lover!

    It was brief; would that it had lasted longer with you!

  13. It shone through union, just as my days shone

    In a most accomplished patron, bountiful among the eminent;

  14. In the lord of rank and perfection, endowed with honor;

    In the noble-hearted man, brother of glory, in reverent majesty;

  15. In a sea of learning, surging and vast;

    In a rain of generosity, pouring down with cheerfulness;

  16. In the most awe-inspiring lion, and the most exalted, majestic man;

    From whom champions turned away in awe.

  17. In the age's unique man, and in a peerless pearl;

    In a jewel of glory, highly prized among precious things;

  18. In a Kaaba of understanding, which minds circumambulate;

    In a qibla of aspiration, toward which hopes are directed;

  19. In a sun of beauty, and in Kamal's grandson;

    In a full moon of lofty honors, which shone and shines still;

  20. In the finest in character, and the noble in disposition;

    In the noblest by his grandsire, and the honored through his maternal uncles.

  21. O gallant man, companion of loyalty and truth!

    O generous man, brother of openhandedness and bountiful giving!

  22. O noble-hearted man, Abu al-Fawz, O scion of noble men!

    O lion cub of lofty glories, whose thickets are the Farqad stars!

  23. O jewel of the age, with no likeness or equal,

    Indeed, he stands alone within it, apart from peers and equals.

  24. Indeed, I offer you a poem of praise,

    In the sweetest composition of verse, at this moment.

  25. So look upon it with an eye of favor and acceptance,

    And favor it with a robe of gracious attention.

  26. And remain safe in the Generous One's protection and care,

    As long as the hill-doves lament, stirring turmoil;

  27. As long as al-Fath, the humble servant of the Gentle One, weaves praise

    In the finest, sweetest verse and the fairest pattern.
