1. ذاتُ الجَمالِ قَد دَرَت

    بِأَنَّني فيها أَرِقْ

    The beautiful one has come to know

    that because of her I lie awake.

  2. زارَت بِلَيلٍ ما بِهِ

    لَنا رَقيبٌ يَستَرِق

    She visited on a night when

    we had no watcher eavesdropping.

  3. فَصُبحهُ تَنَفَّساً

    أَبدى وَقامَ يَستَبِق

    Then its dawn began to breathe,

    showed itself, rose, and raced ahead.

  4. وَغارَ مِنّا حَسَداً

    يُريدُ أَنّا نَفتَرِق

    And, envious, it grew jealous of us,

    wanting us to part.

  5. قُلتُ تَنَفَّسْ عاجِلاً

    يا صُبحُ حتّى تَنفَلِق

    I said, “Breathe on in haste,

    O dawn, until you break apart!”
