قَد كُنتُ مِمَّن يَميزُ اللَّيلَ يَعرفهُ
مِنَ النَّهارِ بِلا شَكٍّ ولا رِيَبِ
I once was one who could discern the night and know it
from day, without doubt or misgiving.
وَحينَ شَمسُ مُحيّاهُ لَقَد طَلَعَت
دامَ النّهارُ فلا ليلٌ لمرتقبِ
And when the sun of his countenance truly rose,
daylight endured—there is no night for one who waits.
