كَيفَ سَرقتَ الكحلَ ظَبيَ الفلا
مِن عَينِ حِبي الأَكحَلِ الزَّينِ
How did you steal the kohl, O gazelle of the wild,
from the eye of my beautiful, dark-eyed beloved?
وما علمتُ الظّبيَ لصّاً غَدا
قد يسرقُ الكحلَ من العَينِ
Never did I know the gazelle to become a thief
who might steal the kohl from the eye.
