هَذا الزّمان الّذي كنّا نُحاذِرهُ

وَأَنْ نَعيشَ إِلى أَيامهِ السّودِ

This is the age we feared

And living to see its dark days.

إِلَيهِ صِرنا وَنَرويهِ بِلا رَيبٍ

في قَول كعبٍ وَفي قَول ابنِ مَسعودِ

Yet we have come to it and relate it without doubt

In the words of Ka'b and Ibn Mas'ud.

دَهراً نَرى الخَيرَ مَردوداً بِأَجمَعِهِ

وَكلّ بابٍ لَه يَبدو بِمَسدودِ

An age where we see all good completely rejected,

And every door to it appears blocked.

وَالحَقُّ كَالخَيرِ لَسنا فيهِ نَقبلهُ

وَالشرّ كالظّلمِ فيهِ غير مَردودِ

Truth and goodness we do not accept,

While evil and injustice cannot be repelled.

إِن دامَ هَذا وَلَم يَحدث لَهُ بَدَل

تَزدادُ أَهوالُهُ مِن غَيرِ تَحديدِ

If this persists and nothing changes it

Its terrors will grow boundlessly.

وَإِن قُلوب الوَرى دامَت مُفرّقة

لَم يُبْكَ مَيْتٌ وَلَم يُفرَح بِمَولودِ

And if people's hearts remain divided,

No dead will be mourned, no newborn greeted.
