1. فمَن شَبَّهَ البَحرِيَّ بِالبَحرِ مُخطئٌ

    وَلَيسَ لِذا التشبيه عندي اِلْتِفاتُ

    Whoever compares the sailor to the sea is wrong;

    I pay no heed to such a simile.

  2. فَذلِكَ مِلحُ الطعمِ مُرٌّ مَذاقُهُ

    وَهَذا عذيبُ الفَضلِ حُلوٌ فُراتُ

    For the former is salt, bitter to taste,

    While the latter is fresh, sweet Euphrates.
