1. لَقَد حَوَت عَينُهُ كحلاً عَلى كحل

    فَقالَ لمّا سَبى العُشّاقَ بِالمُقَلِ

    His eyes contained kohl upon kohl,

    So when he enslaved lovers with a glance, he said:

  2. سَوادُ أَعيُنِهم كَحلي اِكتَحَلت بِهِ

    وَمن قُلوبهمِ حبّاتها كَحُلي

    The blackness of their eyes is my kohl with which I adorned myself,

    And the pieces of their hearts are my kohl.
