Return to the peace of love and reconcile,
For reconciliation is best for people and most virtuous.
What is this estrangement, aloofness and disdain?
When they are but ugly and shameful traits.
If you only knew the harms of estrangement,
And the benefits of affection you'd realize.
Order is not aloofness and caution,
Rather, order is agreement and reconciliation.
O people of my love, I have offered you
Sincere advice about passion and counsel.
I have been loyal in my love for you, with a heart
That safeguards affection for you lifelong.
I have never been deceitful in my love,
And in your affairs, I am the truthful advisor.
I yearn for the dwellings and encampments,
Where the prime of youth bloomed in their valleys.
Those dwellings were radiant for loved ones,
Rising over the dunes and terrains.
When I dwelled in those places, conversing
With beloveds through discourse I'd engage.
When I was blossoming in the spring of youth,
My heart overflowing with joy and mirth.
Settling among them through the seasons,
Coming to them at dawn and leaving at eve.
Fragrant with their musk, bathed in it,
As if their gentle breezes spread its scent.
Does any garden blossom such fragrance,
As this musk's perfume that exudes from them?
The birds' song over the meadows delights me,
With doves, francolins and partridges calling.
Gazelles come to me, subtly flirting,
Till their conversation makes springs flow from the sands.
With it, spirit and passion for love revive in me,
A soul and heart roused in conversation and limbs.
Through it I spend evenings in infatuation,
And mornings in joy, elation at dawn.
Through it, the breeze heals me,
Its hand caressing me gently in greeting.
When I was there, gazing at the stars,
Their radiance shining upon me glittering.
When I was there, as planets rose
In the celestial sphere, with the sun among them reigning.
The devout ascetic, Anwar the worshipper,
The devout, pious and righteous saint.
The articulate scholar and towering pillar,
Exalted by the Wise One, the All-Conquering.
The eminent master, the leader whose
Proofs vanquish all through compelling demonstration.
The Lord of sciences, Abu al-Fuhum, brother of discretion,
Treasury of knowledge with no peer contending.
Citadel of Shariah, of truth and guidance,
By the means of that clear, illuminated path.
He is the Shafi'i jurist of his time, as from him
Poured judgements, deriving rulings from cases.
He is the Sibawayh of his day, its Khalil,
But he is the conclusive authority, not mere imitator.
All branches of knowledge bear witness to his excellence,
As impartial witnesses, none with injustice intending.
If the choicest minds considered his sound approach,
The perspectives of proofs would suffice them, as he is an ocean swelling.
None who debated with him prevailed,
Except they were rendered mute, unable to utter a word.
With proofs in his hands, if extended,
Are white, polished blades, gleaming knives.
How many false claims he refuted with defeat,
Silencing them in resignation, though they loudly complained.
The eloquent Arabist in rhetoric,
Whose eloquence enchants with its alluring, subtle charm.
With fluency, vigor and virtuous merits,
He amazes receptive souls aiming high.
If faced by grand speech-givers at oratory contests,
Competing at Ukaz and exerting their efforts,
You'd see them before him made mute,
Unable to converse or make so much as a peep.
The glorious one, pride of the eminent,
Where glories and grandeurs abide.
Lord of the lofty enterprises, in his abundant wealth,
Beyond which the starry tower pales as insignificant.
Lord of achievements, his pens that inscribed
The highest enterprises, to grand ambitions aspiring.
Preserving benefits for mankind therein,
Of use, guidance, and sincere advice.
If studded across pages, his works,
Are illuminations for hearts and minds.
Tongues and lances fear them,
As the polished blade fears its bite.
All shameless souls revere them in life,
Even the refractory and unruly man of wrath.
Fair morals and manners, virtues of all kind,
And praiseworthy merits abound in him.
An ocean of nobility, his gifts of aid
Eclipse even the son of Ma'n in generosity abounding.
Modesty flows in his ease, truly he
Is its brilliant, radiant, resplendent face.
With eloquence, cordiality and smiling grace,
Thus the noble, generous man is praised.
O exalted master, of lofty station that
Rises above achievements, seeking ever more.
You donned the raiment of perfection, undoubtedly
Complete in every way, perfection enveloping.
I send you a precious gift,
Bearing, like the sun at dawn, traits of light.
A brilliant pearl, precious gem,
Whose beauty if unveiled, even stars pale beside.
Strung in your lofty eulogy, fashioned as a necklace,
While such praises are the costliest necklaces.
Dipped in its fragrant musk, exhaling a scent -
How much of this perfume from it blows!
My pride, I praised you with it,
And in composing it, I your panegyrist become.
It came to you walking shyly, lightly swaying,
Like a delicate branch, gently bending.
So accept it, as you are best inclined,
The most gracious in your embrace extending.
Turn away brother, with kindly discretion,
Overlooking flaws, though conspicuous and glaring.
Forgive freely brother with graceful pardon,
When it misspeaks, for one like you makes amends.
Rather, be generous and mild in clemency,
The gracious forgive, though rash words offending.
What ode was refined if it has no
Shortcomings or defects you could blame?
Be well and prosper, comfortable and carefree,
As you reign supreme, prevailing, succeeding.
The sun neither rises, nor stars emerge,
Lightning neither flashes illuminating,
No branch sways in the breeze,
No youth departs or old man lingers,
Without the lover imploring beloveds, saying:
Return to the peace of love and reconcile.
