1. O mistress of the gaze, from whose arrows

    My heart melts, and then the arrowheads remain;

  2. And O mistress of the mouth whose speech is sweet,

    And from it wine indeed comes round to us;

  3. And O lifeblood of souls, sweet basil of the bosom,

    And pupil of beauty's eye, which is lined with kohl;

  4. And O slender branch of beauty's bān tree, swayed by the east wind,

    And O you who assail with an oryx's eyes;

  5. Around her the lovers' hearts hover,

    They circle around her, intent on alighting.

  6. Why, O life of the soul, did you drive me from you,

    And turn to another, while he turns away from you?

  7. And I possess a love found nowhere else,

    And it has no equal among lovers.

  8. And not everyone who claims love is love-stricken,

    And not every friend among mankind is an intimate friend.

  9. I have outweighed love's little band in longing for you,

    And indeed my passion is witness and proof.

  10. And your two eyes, then your heart, and my anguish,

    Are trustworthy, upright witnesses, beyond doubt.

  11. And if you are in doubt about what I have said,

    Urged to it by a reproacher, like the slanderers,

  12. Weigh the people, so that, when weighing them, you may know,

    When the balance is lifted, how I tip the scales.
