1. The universe and the face of time beamed with joy;

    And joy expressed itself in the sweetest tongue.

  2. And the nightingale of joys sang at midmorning,

    And so shamed the flute in the singing girls' hands.

  3. And delight warbled in the garden of bliss,

    And good fortune arrived at the best of times.

  4. And Time has made our souls sip

    The choicest vintage of glad tidings, like the daughter of wine-jars.

  5. Glad tidings that plainly showed us the meeting

    Of the sun of splendor and beauty with the full moon,

  6. Possessed of glory and eminence, then keen intelligence,

    And forbearance and generosity, with goodness of heart;

  7. The lion, intrepid in battle,

    Of steadfast heart amid spear-thrusts;

  8. The noble champion-knight of sound judgment,

    Who wins first place on the day of the race;

  9. And he who, when he charges with tawny spears,

    Slays the master of sword and shawl.

  10. And if the lions see him, out of fear

    They submit and cry to him, 'Quarter! Quarter!'

  11. That is Ali, exalted in rank among humankind,

    And in name, with standing adorned by honor.

  12. So rise and go to him in garments of joy,

    Offering congratulations, for fortune's hour is now.

  13. And the sun of splendor has joined the full moon;

    Blessed are they both, and the two luminaries have united.

  14. Like two jewels, they were strung together in joy

    As a necklace that has truly put a string of pearls to shame.

  15. Joy came; with good fortune advancing, I did not

    Date it save with 'the finest union.'
