1. The sorrowful one has no relief without nearness,

nor is he revived without the one he loves.

  2. And nothing but love is ever mentioned,

since nothing else is inscribed in my mind.

  3. And his ear hears the sweet mention of love,

and that ear is deaf to mention of anything but love.

  4. Separation from him has rent the body with burning pains,

so it became mottled from the fire of the beloved's desertion.

  5. And pounding grinds his bones in passion,

and before that they had never been crushed by grinding.

  6. And his eye, once keen, became

bleary from weeping over the beloved's distance.

  7. And he complains of nothing but the harm of thirst,

and only his dusky lips can quench that thirst.

  8. Never was the lover threatened with desertion and distance

    without becoming tremulous from fear.

  9. And never did he appear and one untouched by love see him

without his casting that person into love's turmoil.

  10. And never did night's full moon behold him shining

    without swooning, diminished beside him.

  11. And his mole, as it told us, traces its lineage

through ʿAnbar to Bilal, master of the Abyssinians.

  12. Never did the rose unfold in the gardens of his cheek

without becoming the finest bloom climbing over beauty.

for the sting of reproach surpassed the serpent's bite.

  14. I stay awake through the whole long night,

watching for the sun to erase the reign of predawn gloom.

  15. And the night's stars dance when there is no full moon,

so none who saw them was anything but amazed.

  16. For, as they glitter in their dancing,

they are like dinars in a trembling person's palm.

  17. And whenever a sun rises, it reminds me

by its excellence, of the excellence of the reviver of the Qurashi's school.

  19. The water of life—through him, eminence has revived,

and its glory has lived, for without him it would not have lived.

  20. Noble in soul as in lineage, his dwelling stood

at glory's summit, upon a lofty throne.

  21. He made glory his pillow, in pride and honor,

for lofty honors are among his finest beds.

  22. The ascetic worships the All-Merciful with reverence,

as though he truly sees Him, in his fear of Him.

  23. And may God preserve him in honor and guard him

from every envious one who slanders him out of hatred,

  24. as long as the garden is embroidered with cloud-drops, and as long as

loveliness is embroidered in the pearls of blossoms.
