Is it thus the full moon's light is shrouded by the grave?

And knowledge vanishes, leaving neither sight nor trace?

And the brilliant stars have been cast down to their setting.

The estrangement of Islam has taken firm hold, and eclipsed

Is the sun of knowledge by which mankind is guided.

The righteous exemplars have been cut down one by one,

And the predicate has risen to occupy the subject's place.

You hear nothing now but 'He was, and then he passed,'

As the predecessor joins those remaining, just as they too shall turn to dust.

While true sobriety lies within the army of the dead, if only they knew.

Like one who plants a barren stick that bears no fruit.

And where the sinners' hidden deeds are brought to light.

Mankind is drunken with its terror, yet they have not drunk wine.

So be a traveler, my brother, not a settler, for you have surely seen

The ruin of those who erected high towers and built grand halls.

As though they never held power there to command or forbid.

Unbound if they were righteous, but fettered if they sinned.

'Oh, the sorrow of my soul for its people who are buried!'

The truthful ones who never lied nor broke a covenant.

Of the earth were angered, they paid no heed to the multitudes.

To what the decisive verses and chapters have decreed.

Enjoining the good only after practicing it themselves.

They did not make their knowledge a ladder to acquire wealth,

But kept it pure, untainted by any stain of greed.

So hail to them! And hail to their memory!

Those whose praise is fragrant wherever they are named.

Their bodies lie beneath layers of earth, yet it is as if

They move among the scholars, resurrected by their works.

Nor the sheer tapestries with which walls are draped.

Have beautified all chronicles and biographies.

Now he lies embraced within the belly of the earth.

I wish I knew: who now will solve the complex problems

When minds and thoughts are baffled by their obscurity?

Who will enliven the schools with teaching,

As crowds of students flock to them, wave after wave?

Like a bereaved mother, though fate has sealed the loss.

    كانوا فَبانوا وَفي الماضينَ مُعتَبَرُ

    The days have folded you away, O Sa'd, just as they folded nations;

They existed, then departed—and in the ancients is a lesson.

Though your physical form is hidden within the grave's niche,

Your vast knowledge remains spread across the horizons.

That neither wealth nor social rank could ever raise.

It is knowledge alone by which a leader ascends

Above the ignorant, even one of noble Mudar lineage.

Then would that its possessor were immersed in ignorance!

O bearer of Knowledge and the Quran, know that we face

A Day where the first generations and the last shall be gathered.

    فَلَيتَ شِعري بماذا منهُ تَعتَذِرُ

    Then God will question each soul about its duty;

I wonder, with what plea will you offer your excuse?

What will be the answer when the All-Knowing asks:

'Is this what the Messenger said, or al-Siddiq, or Umar?'

    ناجٍ وَمن هالكٍ قَد لَوَّحَت سَقَرُ

    All shall come to Him with hands shackled;

Who then is saved, and who is lost, as the fires of Hell loom near?

And on the Day when eyes stare fixedly in terror.

Our Intercessor on the Day when the fire of anguish rages,

Muhammad, the best of all messengers, and upon his followers

And companions, for as long as the moon rises from its horizon.
