Indeed, I am a man of affection toward one whose affection endures,
but cold toward one who seeks estrangement, and quick to weary.
And I am a man who takes refuge in an abode of abasement,
where hope makes him its slave, abased.
And in despair lies relief from the abasement of covetous desires,
and among people there is a substitute for one who does not love.
