Alas! How much does longing torment you
What does it intend and what does it say
And how much does that make its marks fade
And how much does that make its yearnings lonely
Have you no mercy, no kindness
Don't you know that I am slain
Is there every day a she-camel led
And tears shed and affliction intensifies
And a heart that melts, an eyelid that pours
A mind that greys, a soul that flows
So how much is this weariness, how much this languor
How much this procrastination, how much this departure
Pray for me, for sleep has flown from me
Illness has adhered, wailing has prolonged
And do not think me to be at ease
Even if the ignorant envious blame you
For my body is thin, my shelter collapsible
My heart is sick, my night is long
My eye is tearful, my love is formidable
My patience is fleeting, my concern grows
To God I complain of a sweetheart
Whose love for me never fades
You have severed the ropes, cut off union
And the best of people is an intimate friend
