1. لو كانَ عندك مَا عندي من الكمدِ

    مَا نمتَ يا ليل عن ليلي وعن سهدي

    If you had what I have of sorrow

    You wouldn’t have slept, oh night, from my agony and longing

  2. ولَوْ وجدتِ كوجدي يومَ ذي سَلمٍ

    لما رحَلْتَ ولكن أنتِ لم تجد

    And if you found what I found that fateful day

    You wouldn’t have left, but you didn’t find

  3. أشكو هواك وأشكو أن يفارقني

    ومَنْ يحبُّ فراقَ الروح للجسد

    I complain of passion, and I complain that it may leave me

    And who loves the soul’s separation from the body?

  4. أنت الطبيبُ وأنت الداء واعجبٌ

    مَنْ عَلّم الظبي يسطو سطوة الأسدِ

    You’re the doctor and the disease and it’s wondrous

    Who taught the gazelle the violence of the lion?

  5. ما إنْ مَرَرتُ بواديكم وأثْلِكُمُ

    إِلاَّ وجدتُ له برداً على كبدي

    Whenever I pass your valleys and thickets

    I find a chill pierce through to my liver

  6. فلاَ تحدّثَ ركبٌ عن بلادكم

    إِلاَّ وَضعتُ على قلبِي الجريح يدي

    So no caravan speaks of your lands

    Except I place my wounded heart in my hands

  7. ردّوا عليّ فؤادي في هوادِجِكم

    حَولتُ عودته عنكم فلم يَعدِ

    Give me back my heart that strayed into your camps

    I turned it away from you but it wouldn’t return

  8. اوَوَدَّعوني توديع الْشقيق فما

    كان الْفراقُ ولاَ التوديعُ في خِلَدي

    They bid me farewell like a dear sibling but neither

    Parting nor farewell settled in my experience

  9. لو أنّ ما بي بالحادين مَا زَجَروا

    حُمْرَ النِّياق وبالاجمال لم تَخِد

    If what’s in me didn’t restrain the red camels

    They wouldn’t be held back by either rope or fetter

  10. لو أنّ ما بفؤادي يومَ فرقِتكم

    بالماء لم يَجْرِ أو بالنار لم تَقَد

    If what’s in my heart the day you left

    Could flow with water or ignite with fire

  11. قال العذولُ تجلّد ضَلةً وغوى

    من أين أجمعُ بين الحزنِ والجَلَد

    The monk said: endure herturning astray and passion

    But how can I gather sorrow and composure?

  12. يا رائدَ الريح هَلْ عن عالجٍ خبراً

    فاقصِصْ عليَّ وَحدّث ثانيا وزد

    O rider of the wind, do you know a cure?

    Tell me again, and add on!

  13. هلْ أوَرَقَتْ أثلةُ الوادي بشعب طُوى

    وهَل طَمَا موجُ ذاك المشرب البردِ

    Have new leaves budded on the valley’s oleander by Mount Tuwa

    Has a wave sated that cold clear spring?

  14. مَالي أَحنّ إلى أرضِ الجُناةِ ومَا

    قومي بتلك ولا أهلي ولاَ ولدي

    Why do I yearn for the land of Junah though

    I have no people nor family nor children there?

  15. لولاَ الفقيه ومَاضٍ من لطائفه

    لكدتُ أتلَفُ بين القُربِ والبُعُدِ

    If not for the jurist and the blessings of his grace

    I would have perished between nearing and distance

  16. أسلاَني ابنُ حسينِ مُذ نزلت به

    عن الظعون وسجع الطائِرِ الغَردِ

    Ibn Hussein has consoled me since I descended upon

    The twitter and songbirds’ melody

  17. رحب الجَنانِ بَجِيَليٌّ خلاَئقُه

    أذكى مِن المسكِ أو أحلى من الشَّهُدِ

    Bijaylly, sublime of manners, has welcomed me

    Sharper than musk or sweeter than honey

  18. هو الشَّفِيقُ إذا قلت الشقيقُ قسَا

    هو الجوادُ إذا مَا الْغيثُ لم يجُدِ

    He is the compassionate one, and when I say ‘the brother’ he feels

    He is the generous one when rain is scarce

  19. مبارك الوجه يَدري من فطانتِه

    فطانةَ اليومِ مَا يأتيه بعدَ غدِ

    Blessed of face, his wisdom makes him know

    Tomorrow’s happenings before they occur

  20. في كلّ يوم يُنادي يا عفاةُ فِدوا

    إلى السَّماح ويدعو يا عطاش ردوا

    Each day he calls “O heedless ones, redeem yourselves!”

    “O thirsty ones, come back!”

  21. غيثٌ لَمُرتبعٍ غوثٌ لمنتَجَعٍ

    أنسٌ لكلّ غريب الدارِ مُنْفرد

    A raincloud for one stranded, salvation for one exhausted

    A comfort for every lonely foreigner

  22. مَنْ مالَ عنه فقد ضَلَّتْ ركائبه

    من أهتدي بابي عبد الإله هُدى

    Whoever turns away from him has lost his way

    Whoever comes to guidance comes to my Abu Abdullah

  23. لا يسئلُ الركب عنه إِنَّ غُرتَه

    هي الصباحِ وَمَا صُبْحٍ بمنجحدِ

    The caravan doesn’t ask after him, his magnificence

    Is the morning, and what morning isn’t clear!

  24. اللهُ ألْبَسه مَا لَيسَ يُخِلقُه

    فليسَ يبرحُ في أثوابه الجُدُد

    May Allah dress him in what He doesn’t create the like of

    So he never removes his new robes

  25. والله أكرمهُ والله عظَّمَهُ

    فما يحاذر مَسَّ النقصِ مِنْ أحد

    And Allah has honored him and Allah has elevated him

    So he doesn’t fear the touch of any lessening

  26. سِرْ حيثُ شيئتَ وخيّم مُكنتفٌ

    في ذمّةِ اللهِ في هَديٍ وفي رَشَد

    Go where you wish, sheltered,

    In Allah’s protection, guided and reasonable

  27. إذا حَلَلَتَ بأرض أعشبتْ وَرَبت

    والعِقْد يحْسُن فوقَ الجِيدِ ذي الجَيَدِ

    If you stay where the land is green and growing

    The necklace looks beautiful on the graceful neck

  28. ذكَّرت بالله في دهر به غَفَلَتْ

    كلُّ القلوب لما تُصغي إلى الفَندِ

    You reminded of Allah in an age when

    All hearts forgot when listening to gossip

  29. وَكم أَساء مُسيىءٌ فاغتفرتَ لَهُ

    ولم تَبِتْ بفؤادٍ عنهُ مُنْعَقِد

    And how many wrongdoers have you forgiven

    Without any grudge held in your heart!

  30. مَا زِلْتَ تعفُو وتصفو إِنْ همُ عثروا

    عَفْوَ الكرامِ وتُدنى كل مبْتَعد

    You never stop pardoning and clearing away faults should they slip

    The pardon of nobles, drawing near each distant one

  31. إنْ يُغْضِبُوك فذوِ حلمٍ وتغطيَةٍ

    أو يقصدوكِ ففي أمْنٍ وفي رغد

    If they anger you, you are forbearing and covering

    If they wrong you, you are in safety and plenty

  32. لولا رِضاك لأمْستْ أمَّةٌ بَدداً

    لازلتَ تجمعُ شمْلَ الأُمة البددِ

    If not for your pleasure this nation would be scattered

    You always unite the bonds of the fragmented nation

  33. رِفقاً بهم وانْعطافاً لاَ عدمت فقد

    يعفو الكريم وحَدُّ المشرفي ندي

    Gentle with them, never lacking in restraint

    The generous man overlooks, and the eminent man is restrained

  34. إذا رأيناك قلنا ذا ابنُ أمِنةٍ

    في بطن يثرب حيًّا غيرَ مُفْتَقدَ

    When we see you we say this is the son of Amina

    Alive in the womb of Yathrib, never absent

  35. ما زال حبُّكِ دِيناً في أوائلنا

    وفي البنينَ فحبُّ الشيخِ كالولدِ

    Love of you remains a faith to us early ones

    And in our children, so loving the Shaykh is like loving one’s child

  36. فلا عدمنا زمانا أنتَ غرّتُه

    ولا عَدْمنَاك فيه مدةَ الأبد

    We have never known an era you did not honor

    And we have never been without you for a time
