    لاقيتَ صرفَ النَّوب

    My lord Nur al-Din, may you never

    meet the reversals of misfortune;

    may you live two thousand years

    amid the ease of a thriving life.

    I heard a report from you

    that left me greatly astonished:

    if it is among your intentions

    to take the horses of the Arabs,

    then, from this very hour,

    I strip away my kinship with them.

    I shall be a Zanj, and shall not

    enter into this lineage.

    I am nothing but a mouse

    in a ruined lizard’s burrow.

    What have I to do with mingling among them?

    That is the greatest wonder.

    A man is excused when he

    keeps clear of people who arouse suspicion,

    for I possess a horse

    from the steeds of literary folk.

    ليس لطعن السُرَب

    I go begging with him;

    he is not for piercing ranks,

    بل هُو لحمِل الجُرُب

    nor for carrying armor—no;

    rather, he carries sacks.

    I fed him thorns in Safar,

    and once again in Rajab.

    How often I promise him

    one false promise after another!

    His bridle is made of castoffs,

    and his saddle is made of wood.

    If only you saw me upon him,

    like dung atop a heap!

    From weakness, whenever

    I stir him, he topples over.

    وتارةً يربض بِي

    At times he stumbles beneath me;

    at times he crouches down with me.

    وسَاعةً يضرب بي

    One moment I beat him;

    the next, he beats me down.

    I own nothing else—

    by God—as a means of livelihood.

    No camels, no cattle,

    no silver, no gold.

    Nor will you find with me—no—

    a spear of mine with a long shaft.

    I am no Ibn Kulthum,

    nor Amr ibn Ma‘di Karib.

    I am nothing but a poet

    seeking the Arabs’ generosity,

    حبوب أهل الحَرَب

    like a bird that seeks its sustenance

    from the grain of men of war;

    like a mouse that spends its night

    circling a loaf, ready to leap.

    منكم إليكم هَرَبي

    My lord, I am your servant;

    from you unto you I flee.

    فقد عرفتم نسبي

    Do not mix me up with them;

    you know my lineage.

    If Adam is their forefather,

    then Iblis is my father.

    Instead of my horse, you have enough in

    every long-limbed charger,

    every sleek, towering mare,

    every choice bay kept close,

    squadrons drawn up,

    every vast and clamorous host.

    What is one unripe date

    among baskets of fresh dates?

    Whoever has seen the head will not

    be content to eat the tail.

    By God, I am under protection,

    and praise has been my craft since boyhood.
