  1. مَنْ للقيادة جاء بعد منيَّبُ

    أمّ منْ يُصاد بها الظِبا فتَجيَّبُ

    Who after me shall lead,

    Or with them hunt the gazelle fleet?

  2. من يقتل الغلس الحصيف ويدخل ال

    باب اللطيف إذا أدلهمّ الغيهب

    Who shall slay the sly fox and stride

    Through the door of grace when darkness spreads its sheet?

  3. من ذا يقود فلان نحو فلانة

    ويروغ عنه كما يروغ الثعلب

    Who shall lead So-and-so to So-and-so

    And slink away like the wily fox?

  4. ماتت مفتشة القلوب بكيدها

    فترى بها القلب الجليد يُقلبُ

    Dead is she who probed hearts with her tricks,

    So the icy heart you see tossed and turned.

  5. كانت إذا البُليُّ تُوبِع نقره

    تبقى تفر كما تفر الأرنب

    When mischief was afoot, its tap she would trace,

    Fleeing like a startled hare through space.

  6. كانت إذا ما الليل مَدَّ جناحَه

    قامت تدب كما تدب العقرب

    When night wrapped its wing in dark embrace,

    She crawled forth like scorpion from its lair.

  7. كانت عجوزاً وغدةً صَنْعَاته

    تأتي إليك بكل فَنِ يُعجبُ

    An old hag she was, though her cunning art

    Approached you with every captivating flair.

  8. فتكاملتْ فيها الصفات وهكذا

    أبداً يعز الشيء سَاعة يُطْلبُ

    In her qualities perfection found its part,

    For elusive is a thing sought with care.
