1. خليلي لو أنَّ الديارَ تِجُيبُ

    لما أنّ محزونٌ وحَنَّ كئيب

    My friend, if only the abodes would answer,

    Then I would not be sad and melancholy.

  2. ولو جاءني للبين خطبٌ حَمَلْته

    ولكنَّها بعدَ الخطوب خُطوبُ

    And if news of union came to me, I would embrace it,

    But after betrothal comes separation.

  3. أيوخذ قلبي بالذي جَرَّ ناظري

    وما للعيون الناظرات دنُوبُ

    Does he who captured my heart and my gaze

    Have any faults? For the eyes that see have no sins.

  4. إلاَ ليتَ أنّ الرَّملَ رَمْل مُحّجرٍ

    دنى لي منه أجرعٌ وكثيبُ

    I wish the sands were sands of crumbling rocks,

    Coming near to give me a drink and dune.

  5. وليتَ جمالَ الرائحين إلى الحِمى

    تؤُوبُ وَقَلْبي في الرحالِ يؤوبُ

    I wish the beauty of the meadows going to Al-Hima

    Would return, and my heart wandering would return.

  6. فكم فوق هاتيك الركائب منْ هَوىً

    تُذيبُ وأحشائي عليه تذوبُ

    How many passions above those mounts

    Melt me, and my insides melt because of them.

  7. براشقةِ العينين عاشِق مثلها

    يصابُ وأمَّا رأيه فمصيبُ

    With the coquetry of her eyes, a lover like her

    Is harmed, while his opinion is right.

  8. وَليِّنَةٌ منها البنانُ وإِنما

    أرى الحتف في حيثُ البنان خَضيبُ

    Soft are her front teeth, yet I see death

    Where the front teeth are white.

  9. يُعنّفُني فيها خليّونَ ما دَرَوا

    بأنّ الهَوى صدق القناة صَليبُ

    My friends blame me, not knowing

    That true love is a narrow path.

  10. يقولون تُبّ إن الثلاثين غايةٌ

    فقلت ولا ابن الأربعين يتوبُ

    They say repent, for thirty is the limit,

    But I said, even one forty does not repent.

  11. ومَا لي وقصدُ الباخلين ولم يكنْ

    ليقنعني دون الخضّم شعيبُ

    Why would I be content with misers' purpose,

    If Shoaib does not satisfy me?

  12. أنادي خيولَ الشّعر يا خليُ اقدمي

    فجاءت ومنْها مُصَحَبُ وحبيبُ

    I called on the horses of poetry, saying come O friend,

    And they came, some accompanied and some beloved.

  13. فقلت لمولى تغلبَ ابنةِ وائلٍ

    أعز القوافي داعياً فتجيب

    So I said to the Lord of Taghlib and the daughter of Wael,

    The most honorable rhymes, calling and you answer.

  14. فشِمْنَ القوافي من أبي العِز بارقا

    به الرعدُ يعدوا والسحاب يُصوب

    From the rhymes of Abul-Izz shone lightning,

    With it thunder gallops and clouds pour.

  15. وسوحاً بوادي الدومِ علقت مرتعاً

    تضيق رحابِ الأرض وهو رحيبُ

    In the valley of Al-Dawm, I left pastures,

    While the vastness of earth narrowed, and it widened.
