1. حُييّتِ يا دار ذاتِ القرط من دار

    فأنت موضعُ اشجِاني وَأوْطاري

    Greetings, O abode with arched door, you are a place

    Of my sorrows and wounds

  2. ولا عَدَتْك من الوسميِّ غاديةٌ

    أو مبكرٌ غَدِقٌ أو مدلجٌ سَاري

    No morn passes by you, neither an early visitor

    Nor a late night companion

  3. ومَا تناسيت والدنيا مفرقةٌ

    سرٌّ له أوْدَعَتني أمُّ عَمّارِ

    And I have not forgotten, though the world parts us

    A secret to which my mother ’Ammar entrusted me

  4. غَوريةٌ سكنتْ نجداً فقد قسمتْ

    أحشاي مَا بين أنجادٍ وأغوارِ

    A lady of Ghawriya who settled in Najd, thus she divided

    My innards between Anjad and Ghawar

  5. لا تُوقَدُ النارُ ليلاً حول خيمتها

    إلا وبتّ أفدي موُقدَ النار

    A fire is not lit around her tent at night

    Unless I ransom with my soul the kindler of the fire

  6. عَجْزاء هيفاء شمسٌ تحتها قمَرٌ

    على كثيب وهذا صُنعة الباري

    A helpless, serene she-camel, under her a moon

    On a sand dune – such is the work of the Creator

  7. المسك في شفتيها والأقاح بل الم

    اءُ القَراحُ وَوَمْضُ البارق الساري

    Musk on her lips, even pure water, even

    Soft flowing water and twinkling lightning

  8. وأهلُها أهل أنْعامٍ ومُقْربَةٍ

    جردٍ وكلُّ أصم الكعب خطار

    Her people are people of cattle and feast

    Cavalry and every deaf old man is deft

  9. لو تلمس الريح خدراً من خدوُرِهم

    غصَّتْ بكل رُدينيّ وبتار

    If the wind touches a bit of scent from their tents

    It chokes with every sweet basil and usefulness

  10. مَنْ مُبلغٌ لي عكاً حيثُ مَا نَزَلت

    ويَعْرُبَّا ويُنبّي الكلّ أخباري

    Who will convey to me news of ’Ukaz wherever it is pitched

    And speak of all the details to me

  11. إني حللتُ مَنِ الدحمي في حَرمِ

    يحمي حماه بليثِ الغابة الضاري

    Verily I departed from Dahma in the inviolable territory

    Which its protector protects with the fierce lion

  12. أني نزلت بمن زُوَّاره زُمَرٌ

    مثل الحجيج فرد الكلّ زَوّاري

    I came to the one whose visitors are groups

    Like pilgrims, so each one returned my visitor

  13. عندَ الذي يهبُ الدنيا ويحتقر الأخ

    رى بل الرجل العَاري من العار

    With the one who grants the world and scorns the other

    Rather, the man free of dishonor

  14. جالستُ منه ابن سعدى في الخورنق ب

    ل جالست عمرو بن هند ناقم الثاري

    I sat with the son of Sa’da in the Khornuq

    Rather, I sat with ’Amr ibn Hind, vengeful

  15. وابين الوجه من سَاج أهل به لا

    م بن حارث خيرٌ وابن أخيار

    The son of Milhan, good, and the son of the virtuous

    When I called Abu Bakr for his generosity

  16. ما أن دعوت أبا بَكْرٍ لمكْرُمةٍ

    إلاَّ أجاب كسيل الديَّمة الجاري

    He responded like pouring rain water

    He gifted creatures until my tent could not contain

  17. أهْدىَ الصنَائع حتى لم تسع خيمي

    جَرّ الذبائح حتى مَلّ جزّاري

    He dragged sacrifices until my butcher was fed up

    Whenever my camels appeared, I said when they appeared

  18. ما أن بدالي إلاَّ قلتُ حين بدَا

    هذا رفيق رسولِ الله في الغارِ

    “This is the companion of the Messenger of Allah in the cave”

    The son of Dahma revived the days of the Baramika, though they

  19. أحيا ابن دحم زمانَ البرمكين وقد

    غابوا فصرت كأن القومَ حُضّاري

    Were gone, so I became as if the people were my in-laws

    He gifted me the essence of poems

  20. أهُدي إليه من الأشعار جوهرَها

    وجوهرُ الشيخ عَالٍ فوق أشعاري

    And the sheikh’s essence is higher than my poems

    Sa’d ibn Nabit calls him sheikh of his tribe

  21. تدعوه سعدُ ابن نبت شيخ جُمْلتها

    إذ كان أيَّ حمىّ الأنف مغواري

    Since he was the protector of the honored nose

    He did not go into retreat around Suhba nor Watar

  22. لم يعتكفْ حولَ صَهْباءٍ ولا وترٍ

    بل ليث عادية طَلاّبُ أوتار

    But a ferocious lion seeking prey

    When I tightened the reins toward him from my country

  23. لما شددتُ إليه العيس من بلدي

    حَلتْ على الخصب أجمالي وأكواري

    My camels descended upon fertility and meadows

    What is between the house of glory and the spring

  24. مَا بين ذي رمع بيتي إلى نبع

    الشعب شعبي والأشجارُ أشجاري

    Is my clan, and the trees are my trees

    Al-Samau’al the neighbor said: “He is my neighbor”

  25. قال السَّمَؤْال جاري جارُ منزلتي

    وقال أخر جاري من رأى ناري

    And another said: “He is my neighbor from seeing my fire”

    And the son of Dahma exceeded him in his protection

  26. وزاد عنه ابن دُحمٍ في حميّته

    فقال جاري مَنْ جاءَته أخباري

    So he said: “He is my neighbor from whom my news reached”

    So I said: “I mention you in all the world”

  27. فقلْتُ ذكرك في الدنيا باجمعِها

    فقال نابي يَحْمِيَها وأظفاري

    So he said: “My fang protects it and my claws”

    However I try with him, he stops me and overcomes me

  28. مَا حيلتي فيه أنهاه ويغلِبُني

    وهل يُرَدّ بكفٍ مَوْجَ تيارِ

    Can a palm stop the wave of floods?

    Your name is not mentioned in any land or town

  29. لا يذكرُ اسمُكَ في بادٍ ولا حضرٍ

    إلا كأن منك فيه ألف عطار

    Except it is as if there are thousands of perfume sellers in it

    You have not preceded in valor or generosity

  30. وما سبقت إلى بأس ولا كرم

    بل أنت أسبقهمُ في كل مضمارِ

    Rather, you are foremost in every race

    One who masters while being of no benefit or harm

  31. من ساد وهو بلا نفعٍ ولا ضررٍ

    فلم يزل أيّ نفاع وضرّار

    Then he does not cease to be useless and harmful

    Destruction mends him and mending destroys him

  32. الكسْرُ تجبره والجبْرُ تكسره

    ولم تزل أي كسّارٍ وجَبَّارِ

    You have not ceased to be breaker and obliger

    You built the glory of the House of Milhan when you

  33. شيّدت لامَ بن حار حين أنت لها

    حامٍ بقدرك يعلو كل مقدار

    Were its protector, rising above every quantity

    Abu Muhammad, rather, Othman does not cease

  34. أبا محمد بل عثمان لا برحت

    تسقي ربوعك أمطاراً بامطارِ

    To water your meadows with repeated rains

    I am to you as Salman was to Ahmad

  35. إني لمنك كسلمان لأحمده

    صاف مودته من غير أكدار

    Pure is his affection without turbidity

    Even if I praised you with the Quran then it comes

  36. ولو مَدحتُك بالقرءأن فهو أتي

    إلى ابن عمّك طوراً بعد أطوارِ

    To the cousin of your uncle, sign after sign

    And Gabriel used to bring verses composed in your homes

  37. وكان جبريل يأتي ببيت مكتكمُ

    محبّةً لنبيٍّ فيه مُختارِ

    Out of love for the chosen Prophet

    So may God increase your life as long as the moon orbits

  38. فزادك الله عمراً ما سرى قمرٌ

    ومَا تمايلن أغصانٌ باطيار

    And branches sway with birds upon them
