1. ما أن ذكرت الزمنَ الأولا

    وعصر ليلى والصِّبَا المقبلا

    As soon as I recalled the past days

    And the era of Layla and my early youth

  2. إلاَّ جرى دمعي حتى يُرى

    في كل خد واحدٍ جَدْولا

    My tears flowed profusely down my cheeks

    Like streams on each cheek

  3. قد كنت أغليه فارخصْتُهُ

    والدهر قد يُرْخِصُ مَا قد غَلا

    I had cherished it, but now devalued it

    Time may make cheap what was once dear

  4. ياذا الذي ترنو بعين المها

    كمثل مَا تعطو بجيد الطلاَ

    O you, who glance with doe eyes

    Like what you bestow with supple twigs

  5. حُسْبُكِ يكفيكِ حُلَيَّاً فَلِمْ

    دَمْلَجك الصائغ بل خلْخلاَ

    Your jewellery is enough, so why

    Does the goldsmith adorn you with more bracelets?

  6. وشَعْرُك الفَينانُ يا تلك لَمْ

    عشكله الماشطُ بل رجلا

    Your soft hair, O you there, why

    Didn't the comb arrange it but rather the foot?

  7. وثغرك السِّلْسالُ لِمْ حرّمُوا

    عليَّ ذاك الباردَ السَلسلاَ

    Your ruby lips, why did they forbid

    Me that cooling chain?

  8. قالوا هويتَ العيشَ من أجلهم

    نعم قصدت الهودجَ الأولا

    They said you loved living for them

    Yes, I sought the litter in the beginning

  9. لأنّ فيه غادةً طَفْلَةً

    ترمي فتُصْمِي منّي المَقْتَلاَ

    Because in it was a young gazelle

    Who throws then silences me with death

  10. مَا اتعب العَذَالِ يَلْحُونني

    فيكم ومَنْ ذا يسمعُ العُذَّلاَ

    The censurers tire me out blaming me

    About you, and who hears the blamer?

  11. لم تشرعي نهْدَك ألاَّ أنثنى

    يشابه العَسَّالةَ الذبَّلا

    You did not bare your breast except to bend

    Resembling the withered honeybee

  12. وسيف ألحاظكِ لا يُنْتضَى

    ألاّ فافني السيفَ والصَّيقلاَ

    The sword of your glances cannot be sheathed

    Unless you sheathe the sword and the polish

  13. آه على عيشٍ برملِ الحِمَى

    وهل مُفيدي قولُ آه على

    Oh what a life in the sands of fever!

    Is saying "Oh" of any use to me?

  14. يا صاحبي رحلي كم ذا الكرَى

    مَا تسمعان الديك قد حيعلا

    My friends, how long will we remain?

    Don't you hear the cock crowing?

  15. في عيْدانّ الكرم صَهْبَاؤهُ

    قد مَلئت عنقودَه فامْتلا

    On our vineyard the vines are filled

    Their bunches have ripened, so be filled

  16. فباكرا تَرضَعُ من دَرّهَا

    حتى تُرى أعناقَنا مُيّلا

    Drink early from its berries

    Until you see our necks bending

  17. وهاتِ في حوجيّة الرَّكب مَا

    أغذي ومَا أعْذَبها مَنْهَلا

    And bring in the travel bags what

    Feeds me and its springs are the sweetest

  18. كل كريمٍ قد سَمِعْنا به

    أما كعونٍ بن حسينٍ فلاَ

    Every generous person we have heard of

    Except Ka'un ibn Husain, no!

  19. أن الزميلي أبا أحمد

    له أياد قد مَلأنَ الملاَ

    My friend Abu Ahmad

    His hands have filled the refuge

  20. إن هزّ رُمحاً فَلِطعْنَ الكُلا

    أو سلَّ سيفا فلِضرب الطُلا

    If he shook a spear, it was to pierce the skulls

    Or drew a sword, it was to strike the tall

  21. مُذلاثَ عونٌ بردَه أنَه

    يوشي ويكسو المُعْلمَ المثقلاَ

    Helper Awn clothes with his surplus

    The heavily loaded and indebted

  22. لو قلّلَ اللهُ على خلقه

    رزقا وجئت الشيخ ما قلّلاَ

    If God decreased the provisions for people

    And I came to the Shiekh, he would not decrease

  23. أَثره الله بهذا السَّخا

    حَمّلَه مِنْ فوق مَنْ حَمَّلا

    May God preserve this generosity in him

    He carried above whoever carried

  24. يا عونُ مَنْ مثلكض مشبِةٌ

    أباك بل جدَّك باني العُلا

    O Awn! Who is like you, resembling

    Your father, rather your grandfather, builder of heights?

  25. ما الأنجمُ الزهرُ كمثل الحَصَا

    ما الصِّفرُ مثل التِبْر كلاّ ولا

    The stars are not like gravel

    Nor brass like gold, no, not at all!

  26. ألَّفْتَ شْملَ الركب حتى هُمُ

    جيشُ يَطمُّ السهَلَ والأجْبُلا

    You united the people until they were

    An army flooding the plains and hills

  27. كلّ قبيلٍ نفرٌ قِلّةٌ

    وأنت ما أعرض ما أطولا

    Every tribe has only a few people

    While you are the broadest and tallest

  28. المدحُ والمُدّاح إنْ قصَّروا

    عنك فَفي حِلْمك أن تَقْبلاَ

    If the praise and praiser fell short

    Of you, then in your forbearance, accept

  29. لولاك مَا جاوزتعن بلدتي

    بَيْداء تُكلُّ القلُّصُ البُزّلا

    If not for you, I would not have left

    My abode which worries the uneasy

  30. وخُضْتُ من دربي زبيد دُجى

    وجزت من عرضِ سِهَام الفَلاَ

    And I crossed from my path the darkness of Zabeed

    And traveled the width of barren arrows

  31. وحيس بل نخلة بي رَحبَت

    ألفاً فلم أخط بها محملا

    And Hayys, not a date palm with me in its expanse

    A thousand, yet I did not pass with it as destination

  32. وجزت من شرقي شمير إلي

    حَدْبَلةٍ تحْسِبُوني أجدلا

    And I crossed from my east Shameer to

    Hidbalah, which you would think me lost

  33. فمالَ بين التوفيق عن غربها

    إليك أهدي القول والمقولا

    So between its west and your company

    I dedicate these words and speech

  34. لا أتبْعُ الأوشالَ من بعدما

    رأيتُ هذا العَارضَ المُسْبلا

    I do not follow mirages after

    Seeing this flooding river

  35. ولا ببرق غامض أهتدي

    ووجْهُكَ الصبح إذَا شاء أنْجلا

    Nor by a faint lightning will I be guided

    For your face is the dawn when it lights

  36. يا موقدَ النار ويا مانعَ الجارويا

    ابنَ المُحِبّين العُلاَ

    O fire starter, and protector of neighbour

    O son of two loving parents

  37. عِش في سعودٍ وَابْقَ في نعمةٍ

    ما عَسَفتْ مُهْريّة مَجهُلاَ

    Live in happiness and remain in bounty

    An ignorant fool never experienced
